COLUMBUS
Shirley J. Sears, 86, of Columbus, passed from this life on August 18, 2025, at 7:00 a.m. at Independence Village of Columbus.
Born April 13, 1939, the daughter of Chester and Iris Thelma Piercefield Britton.
On October 9, 1982, she married Ronald E. Sears.
Survivors include her children, Cindy (Alan) Fillenworth, Kelly (Mark) Wampler, and Mike (Heather Fulford) Garrett. She instilled in them strength and compassion. Shirley was a proud grandmother of, Tyson Fillenworth, Kyle (Heather) Fillenworth, Sarah (Chris) Brite, and David Garrett; great-grandchildren, Emma, Sydney, and Addison Fillenworth. She is also survived by her sister, Wanda Pickett.
Shirley now joins her beloved husband Ronald, who preceded her in death by a year, along with her parents, her son, Richard Garrett, and sister Beverly Sorenson, in eternal peace.
Shirley found fulfillment as a retail clerk at Northside Drug Store. She also enjoyed writing poetry, which she also had numerous poems published in various books. She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church.
She enjoyed Bible study, crafting, playing slot machines and engaging in friendly games of bingo. Shirley’s adventurous spirit led her to seek out the serenity of beaches and the water, which she loved dearly. Above all, her affection for family and her cherished cats was boundless.
The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 2:00 p.m. till time of service at the funeral home.
In keeping with Mrs. Sears wishes cremation will follow services and private inurnment will take place at Garland Brook Cemetery.
In memory of Mrs. Sears memorial contributions may be given to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
