Looking Back – Sept. 1

Barber Arthur Lee Stewart, 81, cuts the hair of Craig Yeley at his shop at 1521 17th St., on Sept. 2, 1975. Stewart began barbering in 1915.

2015

Columbus residents were able to keep chickens as pets under a ruling made by the Board of Zoning Appeals, which reversed a decision made my Code Enforcement Officer Fred Barnett. The ruling referenced an animal control ordinance that classified chickens as domestic animals.

2000

John Harker of Hope and James M. Mahoney of Columbus were honored for their efforts in improving the rural community and advocating conservation of natural resources at the annual Rural Urban Dinner at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

George E. Russell of Columbus was named manager of Como Plastics, Inc. and Projections Products, Inc., both in Columbus. Both companies were owned by PPG Industries, Inc., Pittsburgh PPI, located in Newton, N.C.
