As I write this, it is Labor Day, a day that leads me to reflecting on the plight of our “huddled masses.” Working class Americans struggle to make it from pay check to pay check. Hard-fought for rights are slowly being eroded by the oligarchs of our country.
The rich denounce our unions, the 40 hour week, overtime, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and child labor laws.
The “haves” decimate our public schools and try to bleed the money off to fund their private schools and other unregulated institutions.
The wealthy disguise their efforts by pretending they pursue honorable ends like the right to bear arms or to protect the unborn.
All it’s really for is to obtain a bigger slice of the pie for the rich. They steal our wages while they loosen regulations so that they once again can have our children work in their factories and can cut corners without regard for our safety.
They have sold their myths to a group of people they look down on as dupes, who gobble it up like a banal manna from heaven.
You can try to argue with them but it just doesn’t work. Facts won’t convince them they’re wrong.
It’s called “belief perseverance.”
No matter how much truth you give them. No matter how many facts you share. They will not be budged. They want what they are being told to be true. They need it to be true. So, they will close their eyes to almost anything that would shake them awake.
Right before the end there will be an awaking. Something will hit them, and they won’t be able to ignore it. Once the pain gets bad enough, they will awaken.
The question for the rest of us is simply… “will it be too late by then – for them and for us?”
