North boys win Southern Showcase in Alabama; girls take fourth

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Columbus North beat three of the Southeast Region of the United States’ top four boys cross-country teams to win the Boys Championship race at Saturday’s Southern Showcase.

The Bull Dogs finished fourth in the Girls Championship race. North also won the Boys Blue and Girls Crimson races and finished fourth in the Boys Crimson and Boys Gray races.

Denton Sluder

In the Boys Championship race, the Bull Dogs edged McCallie School 96-97 to finish first out of 34 teams. Jace Works and Denton Sluder led North with ninth- and 10th-place finishes in 15 minutes, 7.67 seconds and 15:12.02 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Joseph Day took 19th in 15:29.05, while Rohan Norris was 29th (15:45.38), Justin Reckers 39th (15:54.03), Graham Pumphrey 63rd (16:11.71) and Sam Steinmetz 70th (16:17.55).

Kodi Smith

Kodi Smith finished 34th in 19:24.69 to lead the Bull Dogs in the Girls Championship race. Tristan Works took 37th in 19:32.05, while Adira Sluder was 48th (19:44.56), Emma Lowther 51st (19:46.22), Rendy Zhong 84th (20:24.46), Kylie Brinksneader 89th (20:26.69) and Wendy Zhong 108th (20:50.91).

In the Boys Blue race, Drew Hoeflinger finished fifth in 16:28.02. Garrett Perfetto took eighth in 16:33.02, while Levi Carothers was 19th (16:49.50), Leyton Hottell 27th (16:57.71) and Jackson Lowther 32nd (17:06.13).

Maria Gaggiano Camargo won the Crimson Girls race, where North had five of the top seven runners. Reece Peeples finished third in 21:14.63, while Hazel Sasse was fourth (21:16.93), Lucy Nevins sixth (21:27.69) and Sydney Madden seventh (21:33.40).

In the Boys Crimson race, Jonathan Hatton and Cole DeVresse led the Bull Dogs with 10th- and 11th-place finishes in 17:39.56 and 17:40.15. Alex Thibaudeau finished fifth in 19:57.56 to lead North in the Boys Gray race.
