College sports notebook: Pappano wins club championship; Scruggs picks off pass

RICHMOND, Ky. — Hunter Pappano, who is in the Professional Golf Management program at Eastern Kentucky, won the school’s club championship over the weekend.

Pappano, a freshman from Hauser, had rounds of 72 and 67 for a 36-hole total of 139.

Scruggs nets interception, 7 tackles in win

INDIANAPOLIS — Jaxson Scruggs recorded an interception and seven tackles Saturday to help lead Marian to a 69-14 win against Defiance.

Scruggs, a redshirt junior from Columbus North, returned the interception 13 yards for the Knights (2-1).

Hammons, Blythe play for Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. — Luke Hammons, a senior from Columbus North, had one carry for four yards Saturday in Centre’s 35-14 loss to DePauw.

Tyler Blythe, a junior from North, had seven carries for one yard, one catch for eight yards and returned a kickoff 20 yards for the Colonels (1-1).

Gilley helps lead Sycamores past EIU

TERRE HAUTE — Chloe Gilley recorded three assists, 10 digs and one ace Friday in Indiana State’s three-set loss to Montana in the opener of the Sycamores Volleyball Invite.

Gilley, a sophomore from Columbus East, led ISU with 17 digs and had six assists in Saturday’s four-set win against Eastern Illinois. Later in the day, she led the Sycamores (3-6) with 16 digs and added six assists in a three-set loss to Butler.

Bennett leads Knights in blocks in victory

Sarah Bennett led Marian with five blocks and had four kills and one dig in Wednesday’s four-set Crossroads League win against Bethel.

Bennett, a junior from Columbus North, recorded three kills, four blocks, four digs and one ace for the Knights (10-3, 2-2) in Friday’s five-set Crossroads loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Clark helps Bethany top La Roche

Andie Clark led Bethany with 27 digs and had one assist and five aces Wednesday in a four-set win at La Roche.

Clark, a senior from Hauser, led the Bison with 21 digs and three aces and added four assists in a four-set loss to Oswego State in Friday’s Crosstown Challenge opener. She led Bethany with two aces and notched 14 digs and an ace in a four-set loss at Union.

Saturday, Clark led the Bison with five aces and posted one kill, four assists and 11 digs in a five-set loss to SUNY Oneonta. She then led Bethany (2-6) with 13 digs and served two aces in a three-set loss at Russell Sage.

White, Rumsey run for Boilers

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Purdue’s Neal White, a freshman from Columbus North, finished 100th in 25 minutes, 47.3 seconds for 8K (5 miles) in the Spartan Invite/Big Ten Preview.

The Boilers’ Katherine Rumsey, a senior from North finished 148th in the women’s race in 23:56.7 for 6K (3.7 miles).

Swegman, Kistler lead Panthers to thirds

HANOVER — Callie Swegman, a senior from Hauser, finished fourth in 20:01.07 for 5.15K (3.2 miles) to lead the Hanover women to a third-place team finish in Saturday’s Hanover Invitational.
