In what has been a rough year for the Columbus East and Columbus North girls, both teams appear to be playing their best golf heading into the sectional.
Both the Olympians and Bull Dogs posted their best nine-hole scores of the season Tuesday when they met at Otter Creek for their annual dual match. East had the better of the best scores in claiming a 216-221 victory.
“They’re still working on their short game, and hopefully, they’ll be ready for sectional,” East coach LaDonna VanDeventer said.
Sophomore Abby King fired a season-best 9-over-par 45 on Otter Creek’s North Nine to win medalist honors and lead the Olympians.
“She played very well,” VanDeventer said. “She played bogey golf, which sometimes that is good.”
“I’m really happy with the way I played,” King added. “Bogey golf is always good golf. Everything just kind of clicked today. Everything seemed to work. We played North today, and I got to play with two people I played with in middle school, so it was just a fun time.”
Those two middle school teammates that played with King — North’s Caroline Crawford and Bryn Emmitt — each shot 52 to lead the Bull Dogs.
Amaylie Walsh, Calleigh Gill and Sofia Perez all shot 57 for East. Emma Gill added a 61, and Kolbi Stephenson had a 63.
Pia Mantooth carded a 56 for North. Harper Andresen and Kori Vincent each shot 67, and Keya Goon added a 71.
“I was pretty happy,” North coach Alexandria Weisheit said. “One of our goals this year was to have four scores in the 50s. We didn’t quite get there, but to have three scores in the 50s and two scores in the low 60s was really awesome to see.”
This was the third time the Olympians and Bull Dogs had seen each other this season. The first two times came in 18-hole tournaments, including Saturday, when they played in the Bloomington North Invitational at Cascades, the same course where they will play in Monday’s Bloomington North Sectional.
“On Saturday, we were 27 shots (behind East) for 18 holes,” Weisheit said. “We definitely started the year off not five shots away by any means, but I’m definitely glad to see us end the year this tight.”
