City approves change order for shared use path project along State Road 46

City officials on Tuesday approved a change order for a completed project that involved the reconstruction of a shared use path on State Road 46.

Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety members approved a change order increasing the cost of the project by just over 14% to $241,870.05.

The shared use path stretches from the Third Street bridge downtown to the Walgreens on Jonathan Moore Pike.

The project was awarded to Milestone Contractors during the board of works meeting on June 3 after submitting the low bid of $211,434.34.

City Engineer Andrew Beckort said that when contractors removed the original trail, they found the existing sub-grade to be in poor condition. That required the city to add additional stone base under the new trail, which was the main driver for the cost increase.

Beckort said the additional stone will help the trail maintain its structure over the long-term.
