Muscatatuck NWR to celebrate Log Cabin Day

The public is invited to take a step back in time to Indiana’s pioneer days to experience the history and natural beauty of southern Indiana during the annual Log Cabin Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour.

SEYMOUR — The public is invited to take a step back in time to Indiana’s pioneer days to experience the history and natural beauty of southern Indiana during the annual Log Cabin Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour.

This free annual event, sponsored by the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society.

The day’s family-friendly activities take place at the historic Myers Family Cabin & Barn, honoring the folks who made this property their home. Attendees will have the chance to learn about 1880’s pioneer and farm life.

Activities include live old-time music performed by the Lazy Susan String Band, historic costumed storytelling, a Myers Cabin and Barn tour, pioneer demonstrations, blacksmithing, Chore-Corral where kids ca try chores from yesteryear, visits to the refuge’s closed areas and a free ham and bean lunch cooked over an open fire with homemade cornbread.

For all those who enjoy fall in Indiana, the event kicks-off this year’s National Wildlife Refuge Week, Oct. 12-18, when visitors can also explore the refuge’s hiking trails, auto-tour, birding, fishing, lakes and ponds and spectacular fall colors. Also be sure to visit the refuge nature center, bookstore and gift shop.
