Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board approves purchase of new vehicle

HOPE — The Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board approved replacing a 2016 Ford Explorer from its maintenance department because of mechanical issues.

This vehicle will be driven by the Director of Transportation Joseph Royer. Board members would like to replace it with a medium sized pickup truck and have a budget of up to $45,000.

By going with a pickup truck, the school corporation can attach a snow blade to help clear school parking lots in the winter time.

“If we had two plows and we have the Bobcat with the box, it will just make more hands on deck when it comes to bad weather,” said Superintendent Shawn Price.

Price added if they get a pickup truck with an extended cab, they can still transport students if the need arises.

While looking for a new vehicle, the school corporation will be looking at both new and used vehicles that meet the specifications that they need.

When the new vehicle will be purchased has yet to be determined. But Price expects it to be at the school corporation by the end of this year.

“The last time we bought a maintenance vehicle like this, we purchased a used one to save some money,” Price said. “We will weigh our options and look at the options that we need and try to be responsible with the money and buy something that will get us a lot of use for a long time.”
