Jets rally past Mooresville Christian for first win

June Berkenstock

HOPE — After dropping a close game to Edinburgh in Friday night’s girls basketball season opener, Hauser was looking for a bounce-back Saturday night against Mooresville Christian.

The Jets got off to a slow start, but used a 17-0 run through the end of the first and most of the second quarters to take control and went on to post a 54-46 victory.

“It’s never as bad as you think; it’s never as good as you think,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “(Friday) night, there were a couple of segments that kind of hurt us, and I think we were able to learn from some film study. We were able to learn from some of the stuff that we talked about, and coming out tonight, I think we were able to produce in those areas a little big better. But ultimately, Game 1 opponent was probably a little bit more of a tough opponent than tonight.”

The Jets (1-1) trailed 17-11 with a minute left in the first quarter Saturday before Ava Dempsey and Abby Manley hit 3-pointers to tie the game after one. Braelyn Williams hit a free throw and a 3-pointer, and Kennedy Konradi hit four free throws during the run in the second quarter that left Hauser with a 28-17 lead.

The Eagles, who were playing their season opener, got back to within 31-26 with early in the third quarter, but back-to-back 3-pointers by June Berkenstock pushed the lead back to 11. Another Berkenstock 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer gave Hauser a 47-36 advantage.

The Jets built the lead to 54-41 before Mooresville Christian scored the game’s final five points.

“After that rough game (Friday), it was a really good turnaround,” said Berkenstock, who led Hauser with 21 points. “I think we moved the ball, and we didn’t foul as much.”

“I feel like we played better tonight,” added Williams, who added eight points. “I felt like we shot the ball a lot better, and we hit our free throws. I think we really amped it up from a tough loss (Friday) night.”

Manley finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Jets, who were outrebounded 44-32.

“It’s always tough to come off of a really tough game on Friday night and turn around and have really good energy on Saturday, and that’s what we did,” Shipp said. “I thought we had really good energy, we got contributions from a lot of different people, so that’s a really good positive moving forward.”
