Bartholomew County officials are urging motorists to use caution after receiving reports of icy conditions starting to form on bridges as the county experiences its first snowfall of the season.

The National Weather Services has issued a “hazardous weather outlook” for Bartholomew, Jackson and Jennings counties, with light snow accumulations this morning that “could

result in slippery surfaces and hazardous travel conditions for the morning commute.”

Bartholomew County Emergency Management Director Shannon Cooke said the flurries are expected to stop at around 10 a.m. The National Weather Service is forecasting snow accumulation of around 1 inch on Monday with highs in the mid-30s and winds of 10 to 15 mph.

“We were just getting some reports from dispatch that some of the bridges are starting to ice over around the county and in town here, too,” Cooke said. “I know on the interstate, at around the 80-mile marker, Johnson County has got some accidents up in that general area.”

The National Weather Service also issued a winter weather advisories Monday morning for several Indiana counties in the Indianapolis and Louisville areas as a frigid cold air mass brings significantly colder weather across the eastern two-thirds of the country early this week.

About 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected by late Monday morning across much of the northern half of central Indiana, according to the National Weather Service.

While the advisories do not include Bartholomew, Jackson or Jennings counties, they do include neighboring Johnson and Shelby counties.

Cooke said she unaware of dispatch receiving many calls about accidents in Bartholomew County so far this morning, but is still urging motorists to use caution.

“We’re getting read to put some stuff out on the bridges,” Cooke said. “Just use caution. It has been warm. It’s the first snow. There is not really any accumulation on the roadways, but, still, the temperatures are going to let some of that freeze, especially on those bridge areas.”
