Bartholomew County Health Department to host newborn safety class

The Bartholomew County Health Department is inviting all expecting parents, new parents and caregivers to a comprehensive Newborn Safety Class. These classes are designed to equip families with essential knowledge and practical skills in newborn care and safety, according to a press release.

Classes will take place the second Thursday of the month starting today. Two 30-minute classes will be held at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Bartholomew County Health Department, 2625 Foxpointe Dr.

To register, call 812-379-1555 option 1. All participants will receive a gift and be entered into a drawing for a door prize.

The class will highlight the critical subjects of safe sleep, water safety and car seat safety, three key areas in infant injury prevention. Sessions will include interactive instruction and hands-on demonstrations covering these three areas, including guidance on how to reduce risk of sudden unexpected infant death, awareness of early life risks around water and demonstration of proper installation and use of car seats.

“Welcoming a new baby into the home is one of life’s greatest joys, and it also brings important responsibilities,” Bartholomew County Health Department Public Health Nursing Director Amanda Organist said in the release. “We want every parent and caregiver in Bartholomew County to feel confident in the home and knowing how to keep their newborn safe.”

By offering this class, the Health Department helps families take concrete steps to protect their newborns, especially during the first vulnerable months of life, the release says. Their mission is to support residents in achieving healthy living through prevention, education and preparedness.

Promoting safe infant sleep, water safety and vehicle passenger safety are part of broader efforts to reduce preventable injuries and fatalities among infants and young children in Bartholomew County, according to the release.
