Bartholomew County Health Department is offering a Car Seat Inspection Station designed to help parents and caregivers ensure their children travel safely.
The station will offer free, certified child passenger safety inspections and hands-on education to families in the community.
Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of injury for young children and studies show that more than half of all children’s car seats are installed incorrectly, according to the health department.
The new inspection station intends to reduce preventable injuries by providing expert guidance on proper installation and use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts.
Services provided include:
- One on one car seat installation checks for seats for those 8 years old and younger and/or children under 4 feet 9 inches tall.
- Education on choosing the right seat for a child’s age, height and weight.
- Guidance on booster seat transitions and proper seat belt usage.
- Support for expectant parents preparing for their baby’s first ride home.
The station is located at the health department, 2625 Foxpointe Drive, Columbus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those interested in having an inspection are asked to call 812-379-1555 option 1 to schedule an appointment.
Families should bring the child, the car seat the vehicle’s owner’s manual when possible.
