HENRYVILLE — A 52-year-old Henryville man, with ties to Jackson County, lost his life to a house fire Sunday evening while attempting to save the family dog.

Jason Nierman escaped the fire with his wife and three kids, but later went back inside the home in the 2100 block of Speith Road, a spokesman with the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department told The Tribune.

Clark County Dispatch contacted the fire department after receiving a call from someone yelling and a smoke alarm going off in the background at 5:17 p.m. firefighter Jared Phillips said.

Fire Chief Bill Maloney was the first to arrive and he was able to clarify what was happening on scene for dispatch at 5:23 p.m., Phillips said.

The fire trucks arrived moments later, he said.

Nierman, a 1992 graduate of Brownstown Central High School, was later found on the second floor, and the family dog was rescued off the second-floor balcony with the fire under control within an hour.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office and the Clark County Sheriff’s Department.

Some of Nierman’s family including his father, Roger Nierman, and a brother, Brian Nierman, live in the Brownstown area.

There is a GoFundMe set up for the family, those who are interested in donating can follow the link here.
