College sports notebook: Newell sets Indoor Star Meet record; Rutan makes Vols debut

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Matt Newell set an Indoor Star Meet record Saturday to help lead Navy to a 98-83 win against Army.

Newell, a senior from Columbus North, broke a 40-year-old record in the 1,000 meters with a 2-minute, 23.44-second clocking. The old record of 2:23.50 was set in 1986.

Newell’s time is the sixth-fastest in Navy’s school history.

Glyn-Jones takes runner-up at Fairgrounds

INDIANAPOLIS — Butler’s Carys Glyn-Jones finished second in the 800 meters Saturday in the Fairgrounds Invitational.

Glyn-Jones, a freshman from Columbus North, ran 2:14.56.

Gray, Guse, Stevens net top-10 finishes

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — DePauw’s Emma Gray, a junior from Columbus East, finished fourth in the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 9.47 seconds Sunday at Illinois Wesleyan’s Keck DIII Select Invitational.

Wabash’s Jacob Guse, a junior from East, finished ninth in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 13.93 meters (45 feet, 8 1/2 inches). Guse also took 26th in the shot put with a throw of 11.97 meters (39-3 1/2).

Rose-Hulman’s Cole Stevens, a freshman from Columbus North, finished 10th in the men’s 5,000 meters in 16:11.54.

Bruner takes 24th at Mrs. G invite

ANGOLA — Trine’s Luke Bruner finished 24th in the shot put Friday in Trine’s Mrs. G Invitational.

Rutan sees first action for Vols

CLEARWATER, Fla. —Maddi Rutan made her Tennessee pitching debut Saturday and allowed one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings in a 9-1 win against Rutgers.

Rutan, a junior from Columbus North who played her first two years of college softball at Eastern Kentucky, played third base and drew a walk in Sunday’s 2-0 win against fifth-ranked Oregon to cap the Volunteers’ five-game sweep in their season-opening NFCA Leadoff Classic.

Foster collects hits for Badgers

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Kenzie Foster went 1 for 2 with a run scored Saturday in Wisconsin’s 4-3 loss to Florida Atlantic.

Foster, a junior from Columbus East, went 1 for 1 with a walk and a run in Saturday’s 6-0 win against Stonehill. The Badgers went 3-2 in the season-opening Paradise Classic.

Sitterding notches two hits in opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Julia Sitterding went 2 for 4 with an RBI Friday in College of Charleston’s 6-5 season-opening loss to Marist in the Charleston Invitational.

Sitterding, a senior from Columbus East, had a sacrifice in Sunday’s 5-4 win against Central Michigan. The Cougars went 4-1 in the season-opening tourney.

Major, Christophel record hits

ROME, Ga. — Harry Major went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Logan Christophel went 1 for 4 Saturday in Kentucky State’s 11-8 loss at Shorter. Both are seniors from Columbus East.

James gets two hits in opener

HANCEVILLE. Ala. — Frontier’s Dillon James went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored Friday in Frontier’s season-opening 8-5 win at Wallace State.

James, a sophomore from Columbus North, had an RBI-sacrifice fly in a 5-4 loss at Wallace State in Friday’s second game. He went 1 for 4 in a 5-1 win in Sunday’s first game for the Bobcats, who went 2-2 in the series.

Greiwe puts up eight points for IWU

MARION — Koryn Greiwe scored eight points Wednesday in Indiana Wesleyan’s 76-74 double-overtime Crossroads League loss to Huntington.

Greiwe, a redshirt junior from Columbus East, also had three rebounds and one assist in 22 minutes for the Wildcats (13-11, 7-7).

Lawson posts four rebounds in defeat

ST. LOUIS — Kylah Lawson grabbed four rebounds in 14 minutes Thursday in University of Indianapolis’ 64-51 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Missouri-St. Louis.
