Columbus East didn’t have enough gymnasts to field a team Wednesday night, but that didn’t stop junior Bethany Lewis from putting up the top scores of the night against Connersville.
Lewis made it a clean sweep by winning in all four events and taking home the all-around competition for the Olympians.
Lewis scored a 9.3 on the vault, 8.6 on the bars, 9.1 on the beam and a 9.15 on the floor. Her all-around score totaled a 36.15.
“This year, I feel like I’ve been making a lot of improvements in different areas that I haven’t really done much before,” Lewis said. “I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better at my form this year, which is something I had a lot of trouble with in the past, and so I honestly felt like it wasn’t the best meet for me, but I’m happy with how it went.”
Kalia Scott finished with a 7.2 on the vault, 5.1 on the bars, 5.5 on the beam and a 7.5 on the floor.
Kai Scott placed fourth on the floor with an 8.3. She also had an 8.2 on the vault and a 7.9 on the beam.
Wednesday was senior night for East, which honored the Scott twins.
“We can’t say enough good things about them in general and coming into the team and what they contribute. It’s so much,” East co-coach Melissa Dishinger said. “They’re both still new to gymnastics. Literally, this year is their first year of gymnastics. We’re super excited for them to be here. We are happy that they decided to come here for their senior year.”
“They both are very dedicated. They’re hard workers,” East co-coach Katie Menefee added. “They bring enthusiasm to the team. Everybody gets along very well. They want to be here. They’re excited about it. They’re quick learners, so transitioning their cheering skills to gymnastics has been helpful, but they also picked up on a lot of other areas like vault and bars and stuff that doesn’t translate, but they’re doing it. In the short time we’ve had them, they’ve done amazing at picking that stuff up.”
The Olympians have one final home match against Edgewood Monday. They travel to Rushville Tuesday and close the regular season Feb. 23 at Seymour. The sectional is Feb. 27 at Franklin Central.
