The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) announced a new license plate design for amateur radio operators in Indiana available beginning Friday.
Any Indiana resident who holds a current FCC-issued license to operate an amateur radio station will be eligible for the new license plate. Each plate will feature the operator’s assigned callsign and is available for passenger vehicles and trucks (11,000 lbs. or less).
Bob Burns, Indiana Section Manager for the Amateur Radio Relay League, said that the look of the plate honors the heritage of amateur radio and inspires a new generation to get their licenses.
Those with amateur radio licenses act as volunteers during emergencies and disasters by working closely with public safety agencies to provide reliable communication during severe weather events or other emergencies.
“We’re proud to make the Amateur Radio License Plate available to those who step up and play a role when emergencies like severe weather arise,” Commissioner Kevin Garvey said. “Their service helps keep communities informed and safe.”
Anyone who wants the plate can visit a BMV branch with proper documentation regarding their operator’s license to apply for the new plate.
