Marilyn Jo Lain

EDINBURGH

Marilyn Jo (Wertz) Lain, 90 of Edinburgh, Indiana passed away February 12, 2026 at Compass Park in Franklin, Indiana. She was born on July 8, 1935 in Edinburgh, Indiana. She is the daughter of Clyde and Mary Donnis (McMurray) Wertz. Marilyn married her childhood sweetheart, Joe A. Lain, on December 30, 1956. In December they celebrated 69 years of marriage. Their marriage continues to be an example of love and devotion for the family.

Marilyn graduated with an education degree from Franklin College and has been a faithful supporter of the college for many years. She was a proud member of Delta Zeta sorority and enjoyed their many activities. While working and raising her family, she completed a Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University. Once her children were in school, she worked as a 4th grade teacher at Eastside Elementary School in Edinburgh. She made sure her students learned their multiplication facts and shared in her love for Monarch butterflies.

In retirement, Marilyn and Joe set up a winter home at Harbor Lights Mobile Home Park in St Petersburg, Florida where they made many lifelong friends from all over the United States and Canada. Often, she could be found playing bocce, golf, cards or riding bikes with Joe and friends.

Marilyn also loved to read, do crafts and sew. She came up with some amazing costumes for her children and grandchildren. Family was so very important to her. She hosted many holiday dinners over the years. Each get together always included her chocolate sheet cake and epic games of ping pong. Marilyn enjoyed keeping up with family members and couldn’t wait to reconnect at these events.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Joe A. Lain, her children Marla J. Ramsey (Steve) and David A. Lain (LeAnn); sister Phylis Huckabone; brother Don Wertz; brother Dan Wertz (Linda); grandchildren Justin Lain (Julia), Juliann Dunaway (Tom), Evan Mathews (Dierdre), Tyler Mathews (Jessi), Nick Ramsey (Kara), Nathan Ramsey (Aubrey); and great grandchildren Jackson Lain, Joe Lain, Clara Dunaway, Sophia Ramsey and Roman Ramsey.
