Peace Walk scheduled for Friday in downtown Columbus

Mike Wolanin | The Republic People wear white armbands on a peace walk organized by Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus Indiana in Columbus, Ind., Friday, Jan. 23, 2026. The peace walk was done in solidarity with monks from the Huong Dao Buddhist Temple in Ft. Worth, Texas on a Walk for Peace from their temple to Washington D.C. The monks embarked on their Walk for Peace on Oct. 26, 2025.

Local residents are invited to the next Peace Walk planned for 4 p.m. Friday in downtown Columbus.

The walk is planned in solidarity with the monks from the Huong Dao Buddhist Temple in Ft. Worth Texas who walked from their monastery to Washington D.C. Local residents participating in the Columbus walk will walk in mindful silence, beginning and ending the walk at the Veterans Memorial at the Bartholomew County Courthouse.

As the walks are a demonstration of peace, participants will walk in complete silence and without banners or signs.

Participants are encouraged to wear a white armband to signify peace and to carry flowers if they wish. Children and pets are welcome to attend if they are of the age and ability to remain silent during the walk. People of all faiths, traditions, backgrounds, and orientations are invited to participate, and those planning to participate should arrive 15 to 20 minutes early for a short introduction, before the walk begins promptly at 4 p.m.

Here are the parameters of the walk for participants:

1. Participants should remain entirely silent for the duration of the walk. Obviously, in case of injury, one may speak as necessary.

2. No signs or banners should be brought to the Peace Walk. The walk is both practice and demonstration of Mindfulness, Awareness, and Peace.

3. The walk begins promptly at 4 p.m. so plan to arrive a bit early. The walk will be at a moderate pace, two by two, from the courthouse to 10th Street, and then back to the courthouse.

4. Should anyone encounter any negative communication from passerby, participants are asked to not respond or engage and simply remain silent and continue walking.
