College sports notebook: Rutan’s big game helps No. 1 Vols stay perfect; McDaniel, L. Harmon, Emmitt notch wins

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Maddi Rutan hit and pitched No. 1-ranked Tennessee to a come-from-behind 11-6 SEC win against No. 17 LSU Saturday.

Rutan, a junior from Columbus North, started at third base, but moved to the pitching circle for the first time since Feb. 14 after the Tigers had taken a 4-3 lead. She limited LSU to two runs on three hits, with six strikeouts and one walk in 3.2 innings in picking up her second win of the season.

“I honestly just go with my stuff and trust my teammates behind my back, knowing what the weather conditions, they have me, and just trusting my stuff, trusting my pitch-caller, trusting everything,” Rutan said. “My preparation is huge, and just trusting that and diving head-first into it.”

Rutan’s two-out-two run double in the third gave the Vols the lead for good.

“They brought in the drop-ball pitcher, so I was just looking for the drop-ball, sticking to my process and trying to get underneath the ball,” Rutan said.

Rutan went 2 for 3 in Friday’s 5-0 shutout of LSU. Sunday, she went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored as Tennessee (23-0, 3-0) completed a sweep of the Tigers with an 8-5 victory.

“Just the excitement being able to do both (hitting and pitching) and just playing free, I know whoever is in has my back, and I know my teammates have my back behind me,” Rutan said. “Honestly, keeping it fun and keeping it calm at the same time, we understand that we’ve got this.

“Just the opportunity I think is a blessing, and I just love it,” she added. “Being able to do both is really fun. I think it’s just keeping it simple and having fun with it.”

Foster helps Badgers beat SDSU

Davis helps Tigers to fifth-place finish

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. — Willy Davis tied for 29th individually to help the DePauw B team to a fifth-place team finish with a 622 in the Music City Shootout.

Davis, a junior from Columbus North, carded rounds of 82 and 75 Saturday and Sunday for a 157 total. DePauw’s A team finished 12th with a 641.

Greiwe, Wildcats set for NAIA tourney

Koryn Greiwe, a redshirt junior from Columbus East, and Indiana Wesleyan received a No. 10 seed in the Naismith Quadrant and will play No. 7-seed Cumberlands (Kentucky) in the first round of the NAIA National Championship Friday at Rio Grande (Ohio).
