A representative from the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) commended Bartholomew County for being ahead of the state when it comes to serving veterans.
Ron Higgins, a Southeast District Service Officer, spoke during the county commissioners meeting on Monday about Indiana Senate Bill 433 which reforms veteran service officer (VSO) requirements by mandating state accreditation standards for county and city officers.
Before Higgins detailed the new law, Bartholomew County Veterans Service Officer Dillon Miller presented the veteran’s monthly report to the commissioners.
For the month of February, Bartholomew County Veteran Services assisted 114 veterans/veteran families in person and another 392 in phone calls. Miller and his team also were able to make nine trips to Bushman or Wakeman clinic to get veterans to their appointments to receive health care. The department also helped veterans fill out 207 forms to apply for benefits or other assistance programs.
After Miller gave his report and Higgins explained the new law regarding veteran service officers, Higgins said that Miller was doing an excellent job.
“I want to pay you a high compliment. Dillon and his crew are in 100% compliance with this law, even before this law was written,” Higgins said. “Thank you for all you do for veterans across our state.”
