My youngest son had some extra space in his college class schedule last semester, so he decided it would be fun to take a poetry writing class. Poetry isn’t a part of his major, but he enjoyed the class so much that he is taking another poetry writing class this semester.

Rep. Greg Pence and his staff have a messaging problem. Part of it is overexuberance about issuing political zingers as policy statements. But it’s hard to spin Pence’s vote against humanitarian aid for Ukrainians suffering amid a Russian bloodbath.

Journalist Bill Bishop coined the term “the Big Sort” to describe an increasing propensity among Americans to sort themselves into clusters of like-minded groups. One would think this is only natural as people tend to gravitate toward others with similar interests, lifestyles and affinities.

If you need confirmation of how connected the world is, consider that here in Columbus, we have Ukrainian students, Ukrainian immigrants who make their homes and businesses here, and local clergy who have done mission work in Ukraine and vow to return when this horrible war of aggression launched by madman Vladimir Putin is over.

It’s ugly and unfair to compare Vladimir Putin with the leadership of the Indiana General Assembly. But how else can we explain the crass stupidity and irresponsible bullying Hoosiers have ignored from a supermajority now bent on destroying civility and democracy in Indiana?

Karen Niverson is leaving the top post at the Columbus Area Visitors Center after seven years, and hers is experience in a valuable position that will be hard to replace. Niverson announced last week that May 13 will be her last day on the job.
