Exhibit for the month of November at the Southern Indiana
Center for the Arts will feature images by local photographer
Joseph F. Persinger.
Opening reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov.
3, at the arts center, 2001 N. Ewing St., Seymour. The reception
is open to the public, there is no charge for admission, and
refreshments will be served.
In addition to framed prints on paper, framed prints on canvas,
prints on metal, and canvas gallery wraps, an assortment of
unframed prints, notecards, and Jackson County postcards will be
included in the show.
The exhibit will be open throughout the month during regular
SICA hours, and all pieces will be available for purchase with a
portion of the proceeds going to the arts center.
Persinger was employed as a photojournalist throughout his
entire adult working career, but during that time, he says, he didn’t
give much thought to photography as art.
“I was busy photographing traffic accidents, crime scenes,
ribbon cuttings, awards presentations, sports — all the things a
community newspaper covers,” he explained. “It wasn’t until I
retired that I began to look for more appealing images that
someone might want to put on their wall.”
He found great inspiration in Jackson County landscapes, and
in time also became interested in wildlife and nature photography,
capturing everything from sunset over White River and fall foliage
at Starve Hollow Lake to deer, raccoons, waterfowl, songbirds,
hummingbirds, butterflies, and wildflowers.
As he and his wife Judy found more opportunities to travel,
Persinger enjoyed capturing scenes in Italy, France, The
Netherlands, Austria, and Germany as well as the American West
and the Savannah, Ga. area.
Many of his color photos have appeared in various print
publications, and just last year three of his images won “best of show” in separate categories in a contest sponsored by Oak
Heritage Conservancy.
