Drake, The Weeknd poised for big night at Billboard Awards

NEW YORK — Some of the Grammys’ biggest critics, who felt they’ve been overlooked at the famed awards show, will take center stage at another event: the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.

The Weeknd called out the Grammys last year when he didn’t earn a single nomination for its 2021 show, despite having the year’s biggest song with “Blinding Lights” and a multi-platinum, multi-hit album with “After Hours.” But at Sunday’s Billboard Awards, he’s the top nominee competing for an impressive 16 awards.

With 27 wins, Drake is the most decorated artist in the history of the Billboard Awards. He’s up for seven honors this year and will receive the Artist of the Decade Award.

Drake has won four Grammys and The Weeknd has earned three — though they’ve been restricted to wins in the rap and R&B categories, instead of winning prizes like album, song or record of the year.

But the Canadian performers will battle for the top prize at the Billboard Awards — top artist — where competition includes Taylor Swift and late rappers Juice WRLD and Pop Smoke.

Despite dominating the charts and streaming services, Juice WRLD was also snubbed at the Grammys, held in March. Pop Smoke was restricted to a single nomination — best rap performance for the hit “Dior.” However, Swift won album of the year for a third time with “evermore.”

The Weeknd, Swift, Juice WRLD and Pop Smoke will compete for top Billboard 200 album, along with Lil Baby.

For top Hot 100 song, nominees include The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” DaBaby and Roddy Ricch’s “Rockstar,” Chris Brown and Young Thug’s “Go Crazy,” Gabby Barrett and Charlie Puth’s “I Hope,” and 24kGoldn and iann dior’s “Mood.”

Unlike other awards shows where committees determine nominees, the Billboard Awards’ finalists are based on album and digital sales, streaming, radio airplay and social engagement. The nominees for the 51 categories are based on the chart period of March 21, 2020, through April 3, 2021.

It’s the reason why controversial country singer Morgan Wallen is nominated for six awards. Because Wallen was caught on camera using a racial slur earlier this year, he wasn’t allowed to compete at the Academy of Country Music Awards or CMT Music Awards. But despite the fallout, he’s had major success on the country and pop charts with multiple songs from his sophomore album, “Dangerous: The Double Album.”

Billboard Awards producer dick clark productions did ban Wallen from participating in the show.

But Sunday will be jam-packed with other A-listers: Performers include The Weeknd, BTS, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and SZA, twenty one pilots, DJ Khaled with H.E.R. and Migos, Karol G, Alicia Keys, Duran Duran, Jonas Brothers with Marshmello, and Pink, who will earn the ICON Award.

Presenters include Cynthia Erivo, Chelsea Handler, Swizz Beatz, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Gabrielle Union, Henry Golding, Leslie Odom Jr., Lil Rel Howery, Padma Lakshmi, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Lena Waithe and Dixie D’Amelio.

Following The Weeknd, DaBaby is the second most nominated act with 11. Pop Smoke earned 10 posthumous nominations, while Barrett is the leading female nominee with nine.

Others who scored multiple nominations include Bad Bunny, BTS, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat and Justin Bieber.

AJR, Glass Animals, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis with Sounds of Blackness and Ann Nesby will also perform Sunday, where rapper-activist Trae Tha Truth will receive the Change Maker Award.

Rossi scores twice in first half, LAFC beats Rapids 2-1

LOS ANGELES — Diego Rossi scored twice in the first half and Los Angeles FC beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night to snap a two-game losing streak.

Michael Barrios scored for the Rapids. They had won three in a row.

LAFC was buoyed by the return of forward Carlos Vela to the starting lineup. Vela injured his right quad in the April 17 opener against Austin and missed the next three games before he played the final 20 minutes last Sunday in a loss at Seattle.

The return of one of Major League Soccer’s top playmakers left plenty of open chances for Rossi, who had his seventh multi-goal game with LAFC. On both goals, Vela drew multiple defenders, which allowed him to find attackers in 1-on-1 situations.

LAFC (2-2-2) opened the scoring in the 13th minute, when Vela passed it to Barid, who then made a touch pass to Rossi for his second goal of the season. Rossi was able to slide it into the near post after William Yarbrough was caught off balance.

Rossi made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute with a left-footed shot into the near corner of the net after getting the feed from Vela.

Colorado took advantage of an LAFC turnover in the 50th minute when Barrios beat a pair of defenders and shot it past goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega.

The Rapids (3-2-1) had two chances to tie, but Sisniega saved an on-target shot from Barrios in the 60th minute. In the 87th minute, Andre Shinyashiki had a wide-open attempt in the box but was wide right.

Florida men, Texas women win NCAA tennis team titles

ORLANDO, Fla. — The top-seeded Florida rallied to beat Baylor 4-1, and the second-seeded Texas women topped Pepperdine 4-3, on Saturday night to claim team national titles on Saturday night.

No. 2 seed Baylor took a 1-0 lead when Constantin Frantzen/Sven Lah beat Florida’s Duarte Vale/Johannes Ingildsen 6-2 and the Bears’ Finn Bass/Charles Broom beat Brian Berdusco/Will Grant 6-1 to win the doubles point. But the Gators won four consecutive singles matches to seal the program’s first national championship. Ben Shelton, the son of Florida coach Bryan Shelton, clinched the title with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Broom at No. 5 singles.

Peyton Stearns rallied from down a set to beat Pepperdine’s Ashley Lahey 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Lulu Sun held on to beat Taisiya Pachkaleva 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 in the decisive match at No. 3 singles for second-seeded Texas, which won its third women’s tennis title.

LEADING OFF: Yanks’ dominant pitching, Rays get rookie boost

A look at what’s happening around the majors on Sunday:

PINSTRIPE PITCHING

Jameson Taillon (1-3, 5.73 ERA) tries to extend a streak of dominant starting pitching by the Yankees when he opposes Dallas Keuchel (3-1, 4.44 ERA) and the White Sox in the Bronx.

Following Corey Kluber’s no-hitter at Texas and outings by Domingo Germán against the Rangers and Jordan Montgomery and Gerrit Cole against Chicago, the Yankees have four straight starts of seven shutout innings for the first time since 1932 (Johnny Allen vs. the St. Louis Browns, George Pipgras and Red Ruffing vs. Chicago and Lefty Gomez vs. Cleveland).

The Yankees beat Chicago 7-0 Saturday for their fifth win in a row.

New York leads the major leagues in shutouts and have eight in the first 46 games for the fourth time after 1958 (nine), 1955 (eight) and 1910 (nine).

RAYS NEWCOMER

Tampa Bay goes for its 10th straight victory with a lineup now boosted by rookie Taylor Walls.

Walls hit two doubles Saturday night in a 3-1 win over Toronto. The 24-year-old shortstop had never played above Double-A until this season — he was called up from the minors after shortstop Willy Adames was traded to Milwaukee on Friday.

“The past 12 hours has felt like five days,” Walls said before the game. “The events, they’re happening so fast. There’s no way all this could happen in just 12 hours.”

TRY AGAIN

Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias (6-1, 3.04 ERA) makes another attempt to beat the Giants when he starts at Oracle Park.

Urias is 0-2 despite a 2.12 ERA in 15 career games against San Francisco, including nine starts.

The World Series champion Dodgers have won seven in row, beating the Giants 6-3 on Saturday.

HOMER HAPPY

Ronald Acuña Jr. and the Braves look to tee off once more against the Pirates.

Atlanta has totaled 10 home runs in the past two games off Pittsburgh pitching. Acuña hit one of the Braves’ two grand slams in a seven-homer outburst during a 20-1 romp Friday night, then connected for his major league-leading 15th homer Saturday in a 6-1 win.

Atlanta leads the major leagues with 75 homers.

“The Braves are red hot,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “They hit home runs. They lead the league in home runs and they’ve got the guy leading the league in homers.”

HARPER SLUMP

Bryce Harper is hitless in his last 16 at-bats for Philadelphia and struggled after a shoulder injury forced him from a game last week.

Harper struck out three times in an 0-for-5 night during a 4-3 loss to Boston on Saturday. He grounded out with two on in the ninth.

Harper is in a 2-for-25 slide with 13 strikeouts and Philadelphia has lost four in a row and six of seven.

Sallói, Pulido help Sporting KC rally, beat Earthquakes 3-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Alan Pulido and Dániel Sallói each had a goal and an assist to help Sporting Kansas City beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 on Saturday night.

Tim Melia had four saves, including a diving one-handed stop of a shot by Cristian Espinoza in the 52nd minute, for Kansas City (4-2-1).

Pulido took a pass from Sallói, faked left and blasted a shot from the top of the penalty area that deflected off defender Tommy Thompson and then the crossbar before finding the net to give Sporting a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute.

Javier López took a corner kick by Espinoza and, on the second touch, side-netted a left-footer from outside the area to give San Jose (3-4-0) a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Jaylin Lindsey answered with a goal in the 15th, running onto a ball by Pulido near the right post and rolling a shot inside the far post to make it 1-1.

Sallói capped the scoring in the 75th, bending a shot just outside the reach of goalkeeper James Marcinkowski.

Hosmer, Padres beat Mariners 6-4 for 8th straight win

SAN DIEGO — Eric Hosmer hit a two-run, bases-loaded single and Fernando Tatis Jr. came around and scored on an error on the play to highlight the five-run fifth inning for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 Saturday night for their eighth straight win.

The Padres can sweep their third straight series if they beat the Mariners on Sunday. Overall, the Padres have won 11 of 12 games. Seattle has lost five straight.

The game was tied at 1 when the Padres broke through against left-hander Justus Sheffield (3-4) in the fifth. The Padres scored five runs on four singles, two walks, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt by Joe Musgrove, a starting pitcher who sometimes is called on to pinch-hit. The Mariners committed three errors in the inning, two after Hosmer singled.

Catcher Tom Murphy committed an error trying to throw out Jorge Mateo at third, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Tommy Pham walked, Jurickson Profar singled and stole second and Tatis was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hosmer hit an opposite-field single to left to bring in Pham and Profar, and the throw got away from Murphy, allowing Tatis to come sliding in to score feet-first.

A second error, on Sheffield, allowed Hosmer to take third. Austin Nola, traded from Seattle to San Diego at the deadline last year, followed with an RBI single.

Craig Stammen (3-1) pitched a perfect fifth in relief of rookie left-hander Ryan Weathers for the win.

Dinelson Lamet, who finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award balloting in 2020, came out of the bullpen for the second time in as many appearances. He allowed an unearned run and two hits in three innings while striking out five and walking two.

Lamet, who is being brought along slowly after an elbow issue sidelined him during last season’s playoffs, made three starts before the Padres started bringing him out of the bullpen.

Mark Melancon got the final two outs for his majors-leading 16th save.

Sheffield allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out three.

Padres rookie lefty Ryan Weathers held Seattle to one run and six hits in four innings, struck out two and walked two.

San Diego rookie Kim Ha-seong hit an RBI double in the second and Mitch Haniger homered for the Mariners leading off the third, his 13th.

Sheffield got his first big league hit when he singled off Weathers with two outs in the second.

Bogaerts, Santana homer, Red Sox top Phils for 4th in row

PHILADELPHIA —

Xander Bogaerts and Danny Santana hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning, Matt Barnes retired Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins to strand the potential tying run in the ninth, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

Nathan Eovaldi (5-2) ended a streak of three no-decisions, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Four relievers combined for one-run, two-hit relief, and AL East-leading Boston improved to a season-high 11 games over .500 at 29-18.

Philadelphia has lost four in a row and six of seven, dropping two games under .500 for the first time this year at 22-24. The Phillies went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, left 10 runners on base and struck out 13 times — the 14th time in May reaching double digits and 29th time in 46 games this season.

Ronald Torreyes singled leading off the ninth and Jean Segura walked with one out. Harper grounded to first baseman Bobby Dalbec, whose off-line throw to second was reeled in by Bogarts as the shortstop managed to keep a foot on the base, with Segura waving an arm and possibly obstructing his view.

Barnes then struck out Hoskins on four knuckle-curves, the last in the dirt, for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Harper struck out three times in an 0-for-5 night and is in a 2 for 25 slide with 13 strikeouts. Bothered by a shoulder injury that forced him from a game against Toronto last week, he is hitless in his last 16 at-bats.

Boston took a 2-0 lead in the third off Spencer Howard (0-1), who made his first start this season after three relief appearances.

Eovaldi and walked Kiké Hernández, and Rafael Devers followed with a double for the only hit Spencer allowed in three innings. Bogaerts added a sacrifice fly,

Odubel Herrera cut the gap to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Bogaerts and Santana homered in a three-pitch span from Sam Coonrod starting the sixth. Bogaert has 10 homers this season, and Santana hit his second in as many nights since his contract was selected Friday from Triple-A Worcester.

Hoskins hit a solo homer inside the left-field foul pole in the bottom half, reaching 100 home runs in 450 games. He is the third-fastest among Phillies behind Ryan Howard (325) and Chuck Klein (390).

Santana was hit by a Howard pitch in the second inning, Segura was hit by Phillips Valdez in the seventh and Hoskins was plunked in the ribs by Darwinzon Hernández with the bases loaded later in the seventh.

Hernández struck out Brad Miller with a fastball to strand the bases full.

Dynamo hold off Whitecaps for 2-1 win

HOUSTON — Memo Rodríguez and Maxi Urruti scored first-half goals and the Houston Dynamo held off the Vancouver Whitecaps for a 2-1 win on Saturday night.

The Dynamo (3-2-2) took the lead in the eighth minute. Fafà Picault swinged in a cross from wide left, Whitecaps goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was unable to corral it after a deflection off defender Bruno Gaspar and Rodríguez smashed home the putback.

Urruti doubled the lead in the 42nd minute with a side volley to finish Rodríguez’s corner.

Déiber Caicedo pulled the Whitecaps (2-4-1) within 2-1 in the 80th minute, dribbling around goalkeeper Marko Maric and drilling a right-footed shot through three defenders.

Houston’s Ariel Lassiter had a curling left-footer miss off the top of the crossbar in the 67th minute.

Taylor unanimously outpoints Ramirez in unification bout

LAS VEGAS — Scotland’s Josh Taylor knocked down Jose Ramirez in the sixth and seventh rounds and unanimously outpointed him Saturday night to become the undisputed junior welterweight champion.

All three judges scored it 114-112.

Taylor’s big left counter cross to the jaw dropped Ramirez early in the sixth round and he used a destructive left uppercut in the seventh round. The second knockdown clearly dazed Ramirez, as referee Kenny Bayless had to ask him twice to step forward without stumbling.

Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs), who already held the WBA and IBF titles, is the first Scottish fighter to attain undisputed status after taking Ramirez’s WBC and WBO belts.

Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) had only been knocked down twice in his career previously.

It marked the second time the 140-pound title was unified. Terrence Crawford beat Julius Indongo with a third-round knockout the first time on Aug. 19, 2017.

Both are 2012 Olympians, as Ramirez represented the United States and Taylor represented Britain.

On the undercard, Jose Zepeda won a unanimous 10-round decision in his 10-round junior welterweight bout with Hank Lundy, scoring a 98-92 on all three scorecards.

In an eight-round junior welterweight tilt, Kenneth Sims Jr. won a majority decision over Elvis Rodriguez, 78-74, 78-74, 76-76.

Nets recover from stars’ slow start, beat Celtics 104-93

NEW YORK — Brooklyn’s Big Three went from way off to off and running.

Kevin Durant had 32 points and 12 rebounds, Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and the Nets recovered from their superstars’ frigid start to beat the Boston Celtics 104-93 on Saturday night in Game 1 of the first-round series.

James Harden finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in just the ninth appearance of the season for the trio. The three combined to go 0 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half, then stormed out of the locker room with an 18-4 run to open the third and swing the lead the Nets’ way for good.

Durant, Irving and Harden scored 28 of the Nets’ 31 points in the period, with Joe Harris — who made Brooklyn’s only 3-pointer of the first half — hitting another for the other points.

Harris had 10 points for the Nets, who announced a sellout crowd of 14,391 and host Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Jayson Tatum scored 22 points, but shot just 6 for 20 and couldn’t come to his 50-point effort in the play-in tournament, when Boston beat Washington to earn the No. 7 seed.

To show how little time the Nets’ stars spent together, Brooklyn started Harris and Blake Griffin with the Big Three. It was the first time those five started together all season and may have contributed to an ugly opening to the playoffs.

Durant, Harden and Irving were a combined 5 for 20 in the first quarter and the Nets missed all nine 3-point attempts in the period. Boston opened a 32-20 lead early in the second.

Harris finally hit a 3 with 2:18 left and Boston brought a 53-47 lead into the half.

Things changed quickly after halftime. Harden made a 3 after four straight points by Durant out of the locker room. After two Boston baskets, it went: Irving 3, Durant 3, Durant jumper, Harden 3. That capped the 18-4 stretch and made it 65-57.

Irving and Durant combined for the finishing flurry in the fourth, a 12-2 run that extended a three-point lead to 94-81 on Irving’s follow shot.

TIP-INS

Celtics: Robert Williams III had 11 points, nine rebounds and nine blocked shots. He has been battling turf toe and it wasn’t certain he would play until after he warmed up. … Marcus Smart scored 17 points.

Nets: Irving, who spent two seasons with the Celtics, wore green sneakers. … Brooklyn’s starting lineup was its 39th different one of the season, having set a franchise record during the regular season. … Durant moved past former San Antonio guard Tony Parker (4,045) points into ninth place on the career playoff scoring list. Durant has 4,075.

LIP READING

Boston’s Brad Stevens and the Nets’ Steve Nash both coached without masks, now allowed for coaches who are fully vaccinated. Stevens said it helped that players could see his mouth again, because with the bigger crowds now in arenas, it would become tougher to hear his instructions.

But there was a benefit to having his mouth covered.

“As I always say, with an 11- and 15-year-old at home it’s been a lot easier to not say the wrong thing with the mask on and not get caught on the internet than maybe it was before,” he said.

BEATING BOSTON

The Nets have won eight straight playoff games against the Celtics and are 9-2, with a six-game victory in the 2002 Eastern Conference finals and a sweep in the 2003 East semis. It’s the Nets’ highest and Celtics’ lowest winning percentage against an opponent in the postseason.
