Columbus police arrested a local driver on operating a vehicle while intoxicated and auto theft charges after they found him passed out in a stolen vehicle at a Columbus intersection early this morning.

Officers were sent to U.S. 31 and Marr Road at 3 a.m. Wednesday about an unresponsive person in a vehicle, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived, they located Jaydon M. Gilmore, 20, of Columbus in the driver’s seat of a Honda minivan, Harris said.

Officers found several different types of prescription pills in Gilmore’s possession and determined that the minivan Gilmore was driving was reported stolen in Columbus on Monday, Harris said. Gilmore failed several field sobriety tests and was taken into custody without incident.

Gilmore was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw and then taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges: Operating a vehicle while intoxicated (Class C misdemeanor) Possession of a legend drug (Level 6 felony) and auto theft (Level 6 felony).

Candidate drops from primary ballot, plans to run as an independent

A Bartholomew County candidate who filed last week to challenge State Rep. Ryan Lauer, R-Columbus, has changed his mind, and decided to pull his name from the May primary ballot.

Ian R. Godfrey, Columbus, says he still plans to run for Lauer’s 59th District seat. But instead of seeking the Republican nomination, Godfrey says he will wait until the November general election and run as an independent.
