German American completes merger with Citizens First Bank

JASPER — German American Bancorp has completed its merger with Citizens First Corp., parent company of Citizens First Bank in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Following the transaction on Monday, Citizens First Bank merged with and into German American’s banking subsidiary, German American Bank.

Each Citizens First common shareholder of record at closing is entitled to receive 0.6629 shares of German American common stock and a cash payment of $5.80 for each of their former shares of Citizens First common stock, subject to his or her surrender of the old Citizens First shares to the exchange agent designated by German American.

Shareholders who hold Citizens First shares in the Citizens First Bank 401(k) Profit Sharing Plan will receive a cash payment of $25.77.

German American Chairman and CEO Mark A. Schroeder said the company was delighted to welcome Citizens First’s customers, employees and shareholders to German American. The merger represents the next step in German America’s strategy to expand its business model throughout Kentucky, he said.

The combination of German American’s existing operations in the greater Bowling Green, Kentucky market area with result in about a 12% market share and a top three position in the market, Schroeder said.

German American Bancorp is a bank holding company in Jasper, Indiana, which operates 74 banking offices in 20 southern Indiana counties, including Bartholomew County and Columbus, and six counties in Kentucky.

Closings list for July 4

The following closings have been announced for the July 4th holiday on Thursday.

Post offices throughout Indiana will be closed. There will be no mail delivery or caller service on that day. All services resume on Friday. Customers who wish to purchase stamps, mail packages, or ship urgent letters or packages on July 4 may use self-service kiosks at their local post office.

Columbus City Hall is closed Thursday and Friday.

Columbus will not have city trash, compost, brush or recycling collections Thursday. Collections will be delayed one day for Thursday and Friday, with Friday’s usual collections moved to Saturday. Residents are reminded to have their toters out by 7 a.m. The department’s office will be closed Thursday and Friday, but will reopen July 8.

The Columbus City Utilities Office will be closed Thursday and Friday. Summer hours will resume at 7 a.m. July 8. Anyone who has a problem with water or sewer service should call the business office at 812-372-8861 and follow the prompts.

The Bartholomew County Courthouse and county offices are closed Thursday and Friday.

The Republic circulation call center will have holiday hours on Thursday. The circulation customer service call center will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. to transact regular circulation business. The number is 812-379-5601. The Republic main office and all other departments are closed for the holiday.

Helen I. (Taulman) Dollens 103 of Franklin, IN, formerly of Seymour, IN and Columbus, IN passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 28, 1915 in Edinburgh, IN to Hubert Earl Taulman and Pearl J. (Jones) Taulman. She married William Webb Dollens on June 5, 1937 in Hopewell, IN, he preceded her in death on July 24, 1984.

She was a member of the Whiteland Church of Christ, a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 134 in Seymour, IN, a member of the Seymour Elks Lodge #462, and a member of Central Christian Church in Seymour, IN. In Jackson County she served as Vice Precinct Committeeman, a pink lady at Schneck Memorial Hospital, Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout Den Mom. In Bartholomew County she was coordinator for the absentee ballots. After moving to Johnson County she continued to volunteer by crocheting blankets for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Early in her life she cooked meals for the threshing crews on the farm and was always a mom to many. She enjoyed vacationing in Long Boat Key, Florida.

Survivors include her children George E. Dollens of Columbus, IN, William W. Dollens Jr. (Carolyn) of Franklin, IN, Carol A. Dollens of Franklin, IN, and Linda K. Dollens of Franklin, IN, and brother Marshall Taulman of Columbus, IN. Grandchildren Angela Turnmire (Chris) of Franklin, IN, William Dollens III (Michelle) of Indianapolis, IN., Chris Cross (Gina) of Satellite Beach, FL, and Vickie Eby (Bruce) of Jeffersonville, IN. Great grandchildren Elizabeth Worrell (Brett) of Jacksonville, FL, Daxter, Claire, and Martina Turnmire of Franklin, IN, Gwendolyn Grimes (Parker Jones) of Sharpsville, IN, Ben Grimes of Cincinnati, OH and Michael Cross of Satellite Beach, FL. Great-great grandchildren Rilee, Traxton, and Gracie Jones, Rowan Worrell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Carroll Taulman, grandson Jonathan Dollens, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Dollens, sisters-in-laws Mary Taulman and Mary Catherine Taulman, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Viola Dollens, brother-in-law Paul Holstein and sister-in-law Frances Straley.

Ronnie Hewitt will conduct a service on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN, where friends may call from 4 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019 until service time at the mortuary. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, IN.

Chas Eugene “Gene” Settle, 101, of Columbus died at 6:10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2019, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Gene was born in Columbus September 27, 1917, the son of Harley and Hattie May Kinsey Settle. He married Dorothy J. Sparks November 23, 1940 in Louisville, KY; she preceded him in death March 10, 2002.

After graduation he went to work for Arvin Industries for two years, then moving to Cummins Engine Company where he worked for 41 years, retiring as a Supervisor in 1980. After retiring he worked with Butch Nolting on the Nolting family farm. He also worked tending the flowers at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church which let him enjoy his love of gardening. He was a huge I.U. basketball fan and loved to play golf.

He is survived by daughter, Sara J. (Max) Zeigler of Little River, SC; grandchildren, Greg W. (Sheri) Nolting of Columbus, Jennifer L. Nolting Baldwin (Gary) of Columbus and Michael A. Nolting of Columbus; great grandchildren, Nick Nolting, Kyle Baldwin, Ryan Baldwin, Brock Nolting and Emma Nolting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Susan Nolting; son Daniel Settle.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St Peter’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark R. Teike officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to service time. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery.

Kimberly S. (Bryant) Vester, 47, of Columbus, passed from this life on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at her residence.

Born on October 21, 1971 in Aurora, Colorado the daughter of Richard Bryant and Jackie Taflinger Dibble.

Kimberly enjoyed doing yard work, cooking and spending time in the sun. She loved her family and mostly her two children and her fur babies, Lexi and Bailey. She worked in several medical offices around Columbus and surrounding communities as a receptionist. She was loved by all of her coworkers and always had a smile on her face to welcome patients.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Jackie (Kenneth) Dibble; father and stepmother, Richard (Susie) Bryant; daughter, Ashley Staten; son, Jalan Maley; fiance, John Maley; sister, Carrie (Jamie) Nelson; and several nieces.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ed and Pauline Best; grandmother, Ava Taflinger; aunt, Etta Bryant; and a cousin and favorite dance partner, Neil Comstock II.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. A celebration of life visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. till time of service on Friday.
