COLUMBUS, Ind. — A judge has ruled in favor of former Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown in her lawsuit against the Columbus Police Department involving her public-records request for information related to an incident involving two Bartholomew County government employees, a parole supervisor and jail commander.

Brown filed the lawsuit Feb. 17, 2017 after she said the police department failed to comply with her request for information related to the Sept. 8, 2016 incident.

Special Judge Richard Poynter, from Jackson County, ruled June 17 that “Brown has ‘substantially prevailed’ in her action” and that “CPD shall pay Brown’s reasonable attorney’s fees, court costs, and expenses incurred in this matter,” according to the court document.

In the ruling, Poynter said, “The Court agrees with the Public Access Counselor that the CPD provided ‘insufficient detail’ to Brown in response to her public records request.”

Poynter, however, did not assess a $100 civil penalty that could have been levied, according to state law.

Duncan tied for 122nd after opening-round 72

Tyler Duncan carded an even-par 72 in Thursday’s opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Duncan, a 2008 Columbus North graduate, was 2-under after five holes, but ended up with even-par 36s on both nines at Detroit Golf Club. He is tied for 122nd place and will need a strong round today to make the cut.

Nate Lashley leads the tournament after a 9-under 63. Ryan Armour and Nick Watney are one shot back at 8-under 64.

Otter Creek hosting local AJGA qualifier

A local qualifier for next week’s American Junior Golf Association Circle K Junior Championship hosted by Otter Creek will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Otter Creek.

The cost for the qualifier is $25. Boys or girls ages 14 to 18 who have not started college can call the pro shop to get their name on the list to play and can sign up at the course on Saturday morning.

One boy and one girl from Saturday’s qualifier will earn the right to play in the tournament, which is Tuesday through July 4 at Otter Creek. Incoming juniors Kody Reynolds of Columbus East and Nathaly Munnicha of Columbus North are the locals who already are entered in next week’s tournament.

The regular AJGA Tournament qualifier is on Sunday morning, and the field for that is full.

There will be a junior golf clinic at 1 p.m. Monday. Kids can register at 12:30 p.m. and will receive a hot dog, chips and Polar Pop from Circle K.

Because of an influx of donations, local organizers have added Foundation For Youth as a second charitable partner. The First Tee remains as a charitable partner.

Columbus Volleyball Academy nets national runner-up finish

The Columbus Volleyball Academy 14-1 team finished second in the 14-and-under division in this week's AAU Junior National Volleyball Championship. Team members included, front row from left, Megan Tracy, Libby Dippold, Chloe Gilley, Laney Smith, Jenna Guse, assistant coach Brooke Banister; and back row, director Terry Sweasy, assistant coach Bailey Western, Caroline Frost, Allison Gribbins, Erin Williams, Cali Cummings, Quarin Bailey, head coach Stacie Pagnard and Saige Stahl.

The Columbus Volleyball Academy has come a long way since its development two years ago.

Last week, the CVA 14-1 team finished runner-up in the 14-and-under division of the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championship in Orlando, Florida.

The 14U tournament featured 64 teams represented by nearly all 50 states and Puerto Rico. CVA head coach Stacie Pagnard said it was a great competitive experience for the girls to prepare for future high school competition.

“It gives them a better understanding of what is expected and the style of play to where they can transition seamlessly,” said Pagnard, also the coach at Columbus East. “It can help bridge that gap better once they get to high school.”

Megan Tracy, Saige Stahl and Chloe Gilley and were named All-American following the tournament.

“The wins weren’t easy, and every game, you had to put everything into it that you had,” said Tracy, an incoming freshman at East. “I don’t think there was a lot of game where we could sit back, so we had to keep on our toes the entire game.”

CVA finished 12-1, with its only loss coming in the championship match. A few of the teams that CVA had to face in the tournament represented states like Florida, Texas, Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina.

“It was probably some of the best teams we’ve seen this season,” said Stahl, who will be a freshman at East. “We were definitely prepared to come out and play those teams.”

The tournament also provided a lot of fun.

“It was crazy. There was a lot of people there,” said Gilley, who will be an eighth-grader at Central Middle School. “There were people from everywhere. We even played a team from Puerto Rico. It was very exciting.”

Besides Tracy and Stahl, five other team members — Quarin Bailey, Libby Dippold, Allison Gribbins, Laney Smith and Erin Williams — will be freshmen at East. Caroline Frost and Jenna Guse will join Gilley as eighth-graders at Central. Cali Cummings will be a freshman at Seymour.

“It’s not about North; it’s not about East; it’s all about developing kids in this community — that’s what I care about,” CVA director Terry Sweasy said. “That is what I want to grow on and that’s what I want to continue to do.”

The CVA has become more diverse since its beginning, with players outside of Columbus starting to become involved with the club.

“Locally, what we are trying to do with this club is make it a big-time club and not just a small, local club,” Sweasy said. “We’re trying to develop a club into a big-time club where we are the Munciana of Columbus, Indiana, so that parents can get an earlier idea of what playing competitive and playing in big tournaments and doing the things that we do during the season that they haven’t had the opportunity to do before without going to Indianapolis or Louisville. So, we want to provide them with an opportunity here locally to help save them time and money.”

Air Quality Action Day issued for Bartholomew County

Bartholomew County is among the central and southeast Indiana counties for which the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has issued an Air Quality Action Day today, and is forecasting high ozone levels.

Brown, Johnson, Monroe, Shelby and Jackson are neighboring counties for which alerts were issued.

Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high. Children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors, IDEM said.

IDEM encourages everyone to help reduce ozone by making simple changes to their daily habits, such as:

  • Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation
  • Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip
  • Avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7 p.m.
  • Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the air conditioner to 75 degrees or above

Brown County State Park’s campground, lodge reopen

Staff Reports

BROWN COUNTY — The campgrounds, cabins and Abe Martin Lodge have reopened at Brown County State Park, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Modern restrooms and drinking fountains are open. The park’s public pool was expected to open at noon on its regular schedule. Abe Martin Lodge’s Little Gem restaurant was expected to resume its normal schedules for lunch and dinner, the DNR said.

The horsemen’s campground is open, but horse trails are still being assessed for storm damage. Mountain bike trails remain closed and are being assessed as well. Some hiking trails remain closed due to flooding damage to boardwalks and staircases, the DNR said.

Campsites and inn rooms are available for this weekend, and the inn’s aquatic center will be open.

Abe Martin Lodge, pools, modern restrooms, and drinking fountains have been closed since June 17 due to the amount of sediment that washed into Ogle Lake along with torrential rains. Ogle Lake is the park’s water supply, and sediment impacted the filters in the water treatment facility, the DNR said.

Limited day use was permitted beginning Monday, with no potable water supply. A team of DNR and IDEM staff and consultants have worked around the clock to filter out the sediment and produce enough potable water to reopen the lodge and campground.

Two mobile, pre-treatment units continue to filter the water before it reaches the park’s treatment plant. Water production capacity has returned to normal and all required potable water tests have been completed successfully, the DNR said.

Arrested woman kicks officers following domestic incident

Two Columbus Police Department officers were kicked by a handcuffed woman they had arrested following a report of a domestic disturbance.

At about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a disturbance in the 700 block of Wilson Street and observed Columbus residents Clarissa D. Johnson, 36, and Timothy K. Meadows, 39, both of 717 Wilson St., fighting outside a home, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers observed that a window at the residence was broken and a concrete block had been thrown through the windshield of a nearby vehicle, according to officers at the scene, Harris said.

Johnson and Meadows were arrested.

Johnson requested to be taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. After she was seated in a patrol car, she attempted to break out its window, Harris said.

At the hospital, Johnson tried to remove her handcuffs and kicked the two officers, who eventually restrained her, Harris said.

Johnson and Meadows were transported to the Bartholomew County Jail.

Johnson was booked on preliminary charges of disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement and battery on a law enforcement officer. She is being held on $16,000 bond, jail officials said.

Meadows was booked on a preliminary charge of disorderly conduct, and released on $3,500 bond, jail officials said.
