Sheckles went 5-0 on Saturday to help lead the Olympians to a 5-0 team record and the Hoosier Hills Duals championship.

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I try to just focus on what I’m going to do during the match, and I focus on winning my position rather than just the match itself.”

Darby Coles, Columbus North senior swimmer

Coles won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke in a victory against Seymour and took the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle in a loss at Center Grove.

Her performance last week: “Seymour, pulling out a win as a team was great. Center Grove was a little more rough because we lost by a little bit, but when they swim well, it gives me energy to swim well. That’s what gets me through those tougher meets.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I love to start cheers with the team. That’s my favorite thing to do to get really hyped before a race.”

Favorite drink: “Smoothies from Tropical Smoothie”

Columbus Wiese auto dealership announced plans to move to a new location north of Columbus on U.S. 31 near the Interstate 65 interchange.

1991

Gov. Evan Bayh declared Columbus Capital for a Day, moving some state government operations to the city for a day and giving his staff a chance to learn more about the city and it’s role in statewide business.

1966

The 1966 Columbus High School yearbook, The Log, earned an All-American rating, the highest honor given by the National Scholastic Press Association.

Donna Beatty

Columbus

Donna Mae Williams Beatty, 87, of Columbus, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Columbus Regional Health.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Beatty of Columbus.

Edward Miller

Taylor Road

Edward J. Miller, 85, of Taylor Road, died at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Four Seasons Retirement Center.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Klinker Miller.

Leo Thompson

Seymour

Leo A. Thompson, 88, of Seymour, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Born July 21, 1928, in Seymour, Indiana, he was the son of Ralph M. and Susie Quinn Thompson, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Alberta L. Sandefur on June 4, 1950, and she survives.

Leo graduated from Seymour High School in 1946 and immediately started working construction with his father and uncle. In 1951, he joined the Navy SeaBees and was subsequently stationed in California, Cuba, Rhode Island and Newfoundland.

Upon returning to Seymour, he worked with various construction companies building schools and churches. In 1994, he retired from Force Construction, Columbus. He was a 70-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America.

He and his wife, Alberta, were very involved with the International Order of Rainbow for Girls in Indiana and traveled all over the country attending their meetings. He was affectionately known as “Pop Thompson” by all the girls. He had previously served as the chairperson of their Indiana Rainbow Girls Foundation and was in charge of the care and maintenance of their property in Edinburgh.

Leo was also a 54-year member of Jackson Lodge No. 146, Free & Accepted Masons; a member of the Scottish Rite of the Valley of Indianapolis; Seymour Chapter No. 134, Order of Eastern Star; the Seymour Grand Cross of Color, and had received the DeMolay Legion of Honor. He was also a member of the American Legion, was awarded the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and had received the Order of the Arrow with Boy Scouts of America.

Leo was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Seymour and had often served with the trustees overseeing their building, parsonage and property.

Survivors include his wife and their two children, Vicki (Steve) Otto and Dale (Edie) Thompson; grandchildren, Michael Thompson, Amanda Thompson and Matthew (Sara) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Madison, Shayla and Alexys Thompson; his sister, Helen Sipes Lutes; his aunt, Evelyn Wieneke; his sisters-in-law, Lucille Thompson and Shirley Sandefur; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandchild, Katherine “Kati” Otto; his brother, Allen Thompson; his brothers-in-law, Roy Sandefur and Robert “Max” Sandefur; his uncles and aunts, Earl (Golda) Thompson, Homer (Oma) Thompson, Louis Richard Thompson, Ruby (Russell) Guinn, Ruth (Archie) Boggs, Rachel (Kenneth) Findley, Earl Wieneke and Omer “Bud” (Mabel) Quinn.

A funeral memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. at Voss & Sons Funeral Home, 316 N. Chestnut St., Seymour, with Pastor Mike Seaney officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service with full military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Visitation will be at Voss Chapel on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from noon until time of service. Masonic services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday.

Dora Coffey

Columbus

Dora Darlene Coffey, 76, of Columbus, died December 5, 2016, at Hickory Creek of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Coffey; parents, Forrest F. and Helena C. (Wheldon) Davis; son, Richard Coffey; sisters, Violet Carnahan and Shirley Stainbrook; and brothers, David and Gene Griese.

Survivors include her loving daughters, Barbara Shuler, Connie Coffey, Donna Coffey and Marie Coffey; son, Ronnie Coffey; sister, Mary Fields; brother, Forrest E. Davis; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service and burial will be private.

Timothy McKain

Columbus

Timothy Drew McKain, 58, of Columbus, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 4, 2016, in Naples, Florida.

Mr. McKain loved spending the winters in Naples with his fiancée, Tina.  He was an IU soccer and basketball fanatic and had recently picked up the new hobby of whittling wood.  Tim also enjoyed attending church and spending time with his family.

He was born in Columbus, Indiana, July 28, 1958, to the late David and Betty Bruning McKain.

Survivors include his children, Kristin (Zach) Barras of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Matthew McKain of Indianapolis; fiancée, Tina Roberts Bishop of Columbus; brothers, Steve (Jane) McKain of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Scott (Barbara) McKain of Columbus; sisters, Kathy (Nick) Tschudny of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Jill (David) Keach of St. Louis, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 719 Fifth St., with the Rev. Patrick Galligar officiating.  Calling will be from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Kathy Maxwell

Seymour

Kathy D. Maxwell, 71, of Seymour, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at home.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen E. Maxwell; two daughters, Jennifer Maxwell and Stephanie Campbell; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Thomas (Carol) King.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Burkholder Funeral Chapel in Seymour with the Rev. John Erickson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church in Seymour or the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
