Betty Jean Sandhage

Betty Jean Sandhage, age 76, of East County Road 300S, passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida.

Betty was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Decatur County to the late J. Edward and Ruth Frances (Mabee) Schreiner. She married Henry Joseph “Hank” Sandhage June 6, 1959.

Betty was an active member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church where she has served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Bible study group leader. She was a member of the St. Bartholomew Women’s Guild and volunteered at the church office and St. Bartholomew School. She was a member of the Club 24 Home Economics Club. Though primarily a homemaker, Betty had previously worked at May’s Nursery and Cosco.

Betty was a loving and devoted mother, amazing grandmother and energetic farm wife. She loved to crochet blankets, sew and make special teddy bears for her family. She would weave baskets and show them at the county fair. She loved to travel, learn new things, read and spend winters at their home in Arcadia, Florida. Her family will always remember her best-ever homemade noodles, her pink cake sauce and her strawberry shortcake.

Betty is survived by her husband of 56 years, Henry Joseph “Hank” Sandhage; three daughters, Linda (John) Baxter of Columbus, Cheryl (Jeff) Pollert of Columbus and Denise (Bill) Scroggins of Indianapolis; two brothers, Frank (Dorothy) Schreiner of Greensburg and Donald (Kathy) Schreiner of Carmel; and a sister, Joan (Dennis) Tebbe of Madison. Betty also leaves behind seven special grandchildren; Nicole (Michael) Olenik, Lindsey Moore, JB Baxter, Lauren Minniear, Luke Minniear, Allison Scroggins and Lainey Scroggins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Henry Allen Sandhage; three brothers, Paul “Bud” Schreiner, John “Jack” Schreiner and James Schreiner; and two sisters, Marie Herbert and Lucille Youngman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, in St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Jennings County. Friends are invited to the visitation from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home where there will be a recitation of the Rosary at 7:45 p.m.

The Sandhage family has requested that memorial contributions in memory of Betty be directed to St. Bartholomew Catholic Church for the St. Anne Parish in Limonade, Haiti or to St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery through the funeral home.
