East wrestlers claim invite crown, pair sweep matches

UNION, Kentucky — Columbus East built a big lead and never let up Saturday in rolling to victory in the 19-team Ryle (Kentucky) Invitational.

The No. 20 Olympians racked up 268.5 team points. Louisville St. Xavier was a distant second with 205.

“Our kids really showed up to wrestle from the opening round,” East coach Chris Cooper said. “It’s a really outstanding tournament from our guys.”

Two Olympians went undefeated and won their weight classes. Dawson Combest at 126 pounds and Sean Galligar at 285 both went 5-0.

Cayden Rooks (106), Jake Schoenegge (113), Graham Rooks (120), Jake Martindale (138), Ben Wilkerson (152), Austin Wilson (160) and Austin Sheckles (220) all went 4-1 for East.

Jets down Panthers

KNIGHTSTOWN — Hauser rallied from a seven-point deficit midway through the third quarter to claim a 54-45 Mid-Hoosier Conference win at Knightstown.

The Jets (6-4, 3-2) led 23-16 with two minutes left in the first half, but the Panthers went on a 14-0 run to take a 30-23 midway through the third quarter. Hauser then outscored Knightstown 13-2 the rest of the third quarter to take a 36-32 lead.

“The kids responded to adversity,” Hauser coach Brad Hamilton said. “We gutted it out. I think with every game, different kids are gaining confidence.”

Leslie Sims led the Jets with 14 points. Tessa Sims and Abbey Ashbrook each added 10.

Lancers rout Indians

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh broke open a close game at halftime by outscoring Milan 24-5 in the third quarter to pull away for a 62-40 win.

Bri Howard led the Lancers (5-5) with 20 points, five assists and eight steals. Allie Schooler added 10 points and five steals, and Megan Rooks had five assists.

Panthers fall to Bulldogs

NORTH VERNON — New Albany jumped out to a 37-18 halftime lead and went on to hand Jennings County a 68-47 Hoosier Hills Conference loss.

Shelbi Wright led the Panthers (5-6, 0-4) with 17 points. Brooklyn Gaines added nine.

Panthers tame Lions

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County used 22-of-28 free-throw shooting to keep Rock Creek Academy at bay in a 70-64 win.

Tyler Vogel scored 23 points, and Justin Pettit added 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Panthers (2-2). Josh Pettit scored 11 points and Nick AmRhein had nine assists.

Chargers top Lancers

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh scored 28 points in the first quarter, but managed only 24 the rest of the game in a 72-52 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss to North Decatur.

Bobby Simpson led the Lancers (2-4, 1-2) with 18 points. Christian Cox added 12.

SWIMMING

East teams take third

SHELBYVILLE — The Columbus East boys and girls swimmers both finished third in the Shelbyville Relays. Shelbyville won the boys meet, while Pendleton Heights took the girls meet.

East’s Chris Borowski, Austin Guse, Gavin Roberts and Austin Smith won the boys 200-yard freestyle relay in 1 minute, 43.99 seconds. For the girls, Montana Hall, Lizzy Frazier, Brooke Statler and Cortney VanLiew took the 400 freestyle relay in 4:01.56.
