Adult coloring among fun activities offered at library

The Jennings County Public Library has some colorful activities planned to help adults relax from the holiday whirlwind.

Adult coloring books have arrived at the library, and boxes of colored pencils, crayons and colored pens are being prepared for coloring sessions designed for adults.

“The library is providing everything, and it’s free. All they have to do is show up,” said Betty Eggleston, adult services librarian.

A market in coloring books designed for adults has grown across the country because of growing interest in what was once considered to be an activity for children, she said.

“Coloring is a creative activity that seems to relieve stress. It relieves stress because it is fun. Just because it is something you thought was fun when you were a child doesn’t mean it can’t also be fun for you when you become an adult,” Eggleston said.

Libraries across the country are having coloring sessions, library director Mary Hougland said.

“The coloring sessions seem to become a kind of social hour,” she said.

The library, 2375 N. State Road 3, is hosting monthly adult coloring sessions:

10 to 11 a.m. the fourth Tuesday in Conference Room 4.

6 to 7 p.m. on the third Thursday in Conference Room 4.
