Postal service pays tribute to soda fountains

With the help of Zaharakos owner Tony Moravec, Columbus Postmaster Terri Muir officially dedicated a series of Forever stamps honoring soda fountain favorites.

In a ceremony Friday in front of Zaharakos, Muir unveiled five new stamp designs called Soda Fountain Favorites which feature a double scoop ice cream cone, an egg cream, a banana split, a root beer float and a hot fudge sundae.

Muir explained that the soda fountain stamps idea came out of a selection process involving as many as 50,000 suggestions for a new postage stamp.

Debra Sloan provided the history of each ice cream treat and Muir, Zaharakos employees and members of the Zaharakos family brought out photos of each stamp, and the actual ice cream creations for onlookers to view. The stamps are available at post offices and online at usps.com.
