The American Red Cross and the Columbus Fire Department will have a Home Fire Safety Canvassing event Friday as part of the United Way Day of Service.
The two will identify target areas for the door-to-door canvassing project to provide fire-safety information and make sure homes have a working smoke alarm.
Homes that do not have working smoke alarms may have one provided and have it installed during the event.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with the canvassing should call the Red Cross at 812-379-9551. Columbus firefighters are volunteering to install smoke alarms.
Last year, 216 smoke alarms were installed throughout Columbus as part of canvassing events.
