After Party: Oksana Pickens

She goes for the look.

Oh, sure, that includes the whimsical, colorful look of the art that Oksana Pickens creates while painting children’s faces. But equally important to her is that look, that expression on a youngster’s face when Pickens puts a mirror in front of them so they can see the finished design she has meticulously brushed on in a matter of minutes.

“My favorite thing is seeing their excitement and their smile,” Pickens said.

The local nature painter with a studio on Washington Street worked her magic at the Finish on Fourth After Party Saturday in the children’s area. For $5, Pickens created a rich tapestry of bejeweled swirls and hues.

“Painting is just really my thing,” said the native of Lithuania who came to Columbus in 2000, knowing no English when she arrived.

She loves it so much she also face-paints at a range of other events such as Johnson-Witkemper Insurance Biggest Block Party Ever and the BBQ Blues & Brew.
