East wrestlers win HHC Duals

FLOYDS KNOBS — The 10th-ranked Columbus East wrestlers went 5-0 Saturday to capture the Hoosier Hills Conference Duals.

The tournament at Floyd Central featured six of the eight HHC schools, plus Charlestown and Penn. The Olympians beat New Albany 53-18, Charlestown 65-18, Floyd Central 39-30, Jennings County 44-24 and Jeffersonville 39-27.

Cayden Rooks (120 pounds), Graham Rooks (126), Dawson Combest (132), Andy Davidson (152) and Austin Sheckles (220) all went 5-0 for East. Jake Schoenegge (138), Corban Pollitt (145) and Lane Goode (182) all went 4-1, and Hunter Dickmeyer (160) went 3-2.

Jennings went 4-3 over two days. The Panthers beat New Albany 43-29 and lost to Floyd Central 43-33 on Friday night. Saturday, Jennings beat Penn 43-27, lost to East and Jeffersonville 45-29 and beat Charlestown 54-30 and Madison 60-21.

Brooks Wathen (145), Zane Beineke (160) and Brady Shepherd (285) all went 7-0 for the Panthers, while Victor Antunez (120) went 6-1. Dalton Craig (126) won both of his matches Friday but did not compete Saturday.

East did not wrestle Friday.

Bull Dogs go 0-5

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North went 0-5 in Saturday’s Bloomington Invitational, falling to Lawrence North 61-15, Bloomington South 51-27, Center Grove 43-21, host Bloomington North 63-18 and Martinsville 39-27.

Andrew Chapman went 5-0 at 170 to lead the Bull Dogs. Morgan Smith (106) and Josh Larson (195) each went 4-1, and Nick Miller (113) went 3-2.

North boys victorious

GREENWOOD — Columbus North split with Center Grove Saturday morning, with the Bull Frog boys winning 115-68 and the girls falling 97-86.

Evan Patterson led the North boys with wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 51.47 seconds) and 100 freestyle (50.70). Other individual winners were Sam Russell in the 200 individual medley (2:02.12), Angel Torres Martinez in the 50 freestyle (23.37), Kaemon Jiles in the diving competition (374.25), Jackson Nagel in the 100 backstroke (1:02.28) and Adam Zhuang in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.28). The Bull Frogs also swept the 200 medley (1:45.17), 200 freestyle (1:35.81) and 400 freestyle (3:27.56) relays.

The North girls won eight events to four for the Trojans, but Center Grove had a little more depth. Betsy King took the 200 freestyle (2:01.28) and 100 butterfly (1:03.39), Alex Nusawardhana captured the 200 IM (2:15.72) and 100 backstroke (1:00.64) and Darby Coles won the 50 freestyle (25.26) and 100 freestyle (54.26). The Bull Frogs also won the 200 medley (2:01.66) and 400 freestyle (3:43.10) relays.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Crusaders rout Hilltoppers

MADISON — Columbus Christian raced to a 52-19 lead after three quarters Saturday and went on to claim a 57-34 win at Madison Shawe.

Lain Isley led the Crusaders (7-0) with 13 points. Evan Reed added 12, and Kyle Marsh had 10.

Dragons nip Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Silver Creek handed Jennings County its first loss of the season, a 52-51 setback.

Tyler Vogel led the Panthers (1-1) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kenneth Jones added 12 points and four assists.

Eagles split pair

Brown County led 27-22 at halftime Saturday, but host Cascade rallied for a 42-40 Western Indiana Conference victory.

Jordan Samples led the Eagles (1-4, 0-1) with 12 points. Josh Cochran added 11.

Brown County was coming off a 49-43 home win against Eastern Greene on Friday. Samples scored 20 points, and Ezra Scully added 10.

Lancers fall twice

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh made 10 3-pointers Saturday, but it wasn’t enough in a 65-59 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss to Waldron.

Coltan Henderson and Justin Foskuhl each scored 17 points to lead the Lancers (0-4, 0-2). Cameron Cravens added nine.

On Friday, Edinburgh fell to Oldenburg Academy 55-39. Foskuhl led the Lancers with 16 points.

Cougars down Shiners

South Decatur trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter Saturday before rallying for a 60-57 win at Rising Sun.

Matt Cornett led the Cougars (3-1) with 21 points. Oakley Billingsley added 17.

South Decatur was coming off a 55-54 win against North Decatur on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Trojans topple Panthers

ST. LEON — Jennings County had one more field goal than East Central Saturday, but the Trojans went 23 of 39 from the free-throw line to 3 of 8 for the Panthers in a 65-49 win.

Sidney Gerkin led Jennings (2-5) with 15 points. Macy Roth added 10.

Eagles fall to Cadets

CLAYTON — Brown County was within 21-20 early in the second quarter, but Cascade closed the first half with a 24-4 run and went on to post an 80-46 Western Indiana Conference win on Saturday.

Azhia Morgan led the Eagles (2-6, 0-1) with 13 points. Maddy Edds added 12, and Allison Stogsdill had 11.

Twisters top Cougars

OLDENBURG — South Decatur played Oldenburg Academy even over the final three quarters Saturday, but couldn’t overcome an 11-2 first-quarter deficit in a 40-31 loss.

Stacy Fox led the Cougars (1-8) with 11 points, 14 rebounds and six steals. Taylor Best added nine points.
