College sports notebook: Rutan named to Freshman Top 25 list; Greenwell powers WSU past OSU

Maddi Rutan, who has led Eastern Kentucky to at least a share of the ASUN Conference regular-season title, has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association DI Freshman of the Year Top 25 list.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, was named the No. 5 two-way player in the country by Softball America. She is 22-4 with two saves and a 1.90 ERA and is batting .285 with six home runs and 32 RBIs.

On Saturday, Rutan threw a her seventh shutout of the season a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks in a 9-0 win at North Florida.

The Colonels (37-8, 18-3) visit Morehead State for a doubleheader on Tuesday. EKU can clinch the outright ASUN regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in next week’s ASUN Tournament with one win in the three-game home series against Lipscomb on Thursday and Friday.

Norman shines on Senior Day

Sierra Norman helped lead Marian to a sweep of Taylor on her senior day Saturday, allowing the Knights to win the Crossroads League regular-season title.

The Columbus North graduate went 2 for 4 with an RBI in a 6-2 first-game win. She went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs and a run scored in an 8-1 second-game victory.

On Wednesday, Norman had an RBI and two runs scored in a 12-2 first-game win and went 1 for 3 in a 4-3 second-game win at Mount Vernon Nazarene.

The Knights (41-9, 29-7) begin Crossroads League Tournament play Wednesday in Spring Arbor, Michigan.

Foster helps Orange to wins

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse’s Kenzie Foster went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored in an 8-6 first-game win and 1 for 2 with a run scored in a 6-1 second-game win in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep of LeMoyne.

Foster, a freshman from Columbus East, had an RBI in Friday’s 2-1 ACC win against Virginia Tech. She scored a run in Saturday’s 7-3 loss to Virginia Tech.

The Orange (25-21, 7-14) will host a doubleheader with Cornell on Wednesday.

Lemmons records hits at Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. — IU Southeast’s Josie Lemmons went 2 for 3 with a stolen base and three runs scored in a 6-3 River States Conference win at Midway in the first game of a doubleheader.

King collects hit in defeat

WHITING — Calumet’s Bailey King went 1 for 1 Wednesday in a 3-2 loss to Trinity Christian (Illinois) in the first game of a doubleheader.

Greenwell lifts Raiders past Buckeyes

Julian Greenwell went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored Tuesday to lead Wright State to a 14-13 win at Ohio State.

Greenwell, a fifth-year senior from Columbus East, went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored in Friday’s 5-1 Horizon League win against Purdue Fort Wayne. He went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored in Saturday’s 11-4 win against PFW and 2 for 4 in Sunday’s 2-1 win over PFW.

The Raiders (25-18, 14-7) will visit Oakland (Michigan) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Meyer hurls perfect inning for Aces

Evansville’s Jakob Meyer pitched a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts in Wednesday’s 10-6 loss at Purdue.

Meyer, a fifth-year senior from Columbus North, threw a perfect final 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts in Saturday’s 8-7 Missouri Valley Conference win against Missouri State to earn his third save of the season. He allowed two runs on ho hits in 2/3 inning of relief in Sunday’s 19-8 loss to Missouri State.

The Aces (24-19, 12-6) will visit Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday.

Herndon takes second in shot for Hoosiers

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana’s Emily Herndon finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14 meters (45 feet, 11 1/4 inches) Friday in Indiana State’s Sycamore Open.
