Clettus Stephens

Clettus Stephens, 71, of Westport passed away at 8:24 a.m. on Saturday, December 24, 2016, at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

He was born on September 27, 1945, in Casey County, Kentucky, the son of Ray and Lettie (Salyers) Stephens. His family moved to Ripley County when he was 15 months old.

He graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in 1963 and had been a Westport resident since 1973. He retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 2003 after 39½ years of service and was employed at Coca Cola for 7 years. He was a member of the Westport Baptist Church, where he has served as deacon and trustee for several years. He was a veteran having served with the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

He enjoyed woodworking, helping others, reading his Bible every day, and his grandchildren.

He married Sharon K. Ashcraft on March 29, 1969, in Milan and she survives.

Other survivors include his 2 daughters; Marla (Pete) VanSchaik of Columbus and Darla (Benjamin) Ortman of Westport; his sister, Linda (Gene) May of Versailles; his brother, Bobby (Donna) Stephens of Greensburg; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lucille Miller and brother, Russell Stephens.

Services will be on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with the Rev. David Scaggs officiating. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Westport Fire Department or Our Hospice Inpatient Facility.
