Homeless count planned for today

The Region 11 Planning Council organized to address homelessness will have its annual Point in Time homeless count tonight.

It gives a snapshot of the number of homeless people in Region 11, which includes Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson and Shelby counties.

Individuals are included based on where they sleep the night of Jan. 25, organizers said. The count determines the amount of funding the region receives for shelter and permanent housing programs.

Sites have been set up in each county for the homeless to receive care packages as they are counted.

People who are homeless or who know of someone who is homeless can call 211 (United Way) or 812-376-6666 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to obtain information about the sites.
