2 arrested on drug charges after traffic stop

Columbus police arrested two local residents on charges of drug possession during a traffic stop near Indiana Avenue and Dahn Street.

At about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, Officer Luke Nibarger spoke with the driver who appeared to be very nervous and gave police a false name, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The driver was later identified as Whitney A. Bunting, 28, 100 N. Hughes St., Columbus, Harris said. After police confirmed a warrant out for her arrest, she was taken into custody, Harris said.

Officer Branch Schrader went to the scene and K-9 Argo detected an odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, Harris said.

Officers requested that the passenger, Layne M. Schwartz, 24, 3475 Carr Hill Road, Columbus, step out of the vehicle. While searching Schwartz, officers found a bag containing multiple syringes and drug paraphernalia, Harris said.

When searching the vehicle, officers found a small amount of heroin behind the driver’s seat, Harris said. They also located multiple syringes, methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside a box inside the vehicle, Harris said.

Bunting was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of a legend drug injection device, possession of methamphetamine, false informing and a warrant, Harris said. Bunting is being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $27,000 bond, jail officials said.

Schwartz was arrested on charges of possession of heroin and possession of a legend drug injection device, and was released from jail after posting $15,000 bond, jail officials said.
