Athletes of the Week – February 16

MALE

Cayden Rooks, Columbus East sophomore wrestler

Rooks won four consecutive matches, including one over the state’s top-ranked 120-pounder to capture the 120-pound division in the Evansville Semistate and help lead the Olympians to a third-place team finish.

His performance last week: “I thought there were some things I needed to work on, like positioning, but overall I thought I did pretty good.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just go over moves in my head and keep telling myself that I’m the best, and nobody is going to beat me.”

Favorite drink: “Milk”

Favorite food: “Cheeseburgers”

Favorite book: “To Kill a Mockingbird”

Favorite class: “Weights”

Role model: “My grandfather and great-grandfather (both named Lester Perkinson)”

Best advice: “After you wrestle, everything else in life is easy.”

Athletics goal: “Be a state champion”

If you could travel anywhere: “I like to go to Florida because I like the beaches.”

FEMALE

Ashlyn Huffman, Columbus North senior basketball player

Huffman led the Bull Dogs with 24 points and had three assists in Saturday’s 66-50 regional semifinal win against Evansville Central. She added nine points, and a team-high six assists in a 49-45 regional final win against Bedford North Lawrence.

Her performance last week: “I was very excited with our team as a whole, just how we stepped up in those games.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I listen to very loud music, and I love to dance.”

Favorite drink: “Pink lemonade”

Favorite food: “Cookie dough”

Favorite book: “Harry Potter”

Favorite class: “Math ”

Role model: “My mom (Angela Huffman)”

Best advice: “Do everything you do as if you’re working for the Lord and not for people.”

Athletics goal: “Win state and play in college (at Cedarville)”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’ve always wanted to go to Africa on a mission trip. I’m actually going to India over spring break, so that will be pretty cool.”
