Lucas-sponsored bill heads to governor

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana House of Representatives voted Tuesday in support of a bill sponsored by state Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, that would make the possession of a firearm by an illegal immigrant a Level 6 felony.

A Level 6 felony is the lowest level felony in the state, and it can carry a sentence of 6 months to 2.5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

“Individuals who are in Indiana illegally do not have the right to carry or possess firearms,” Lucas said. “There is currently no law in place to address this type of situation, and this bill would rectify that.”

Senate Bill 344 now moves to Gov. Eric Holcomb for consideration.
