Westport child dies after being struck by vehicle

WESTPORT, Ind. — A Decatur County child died after being struck by a vehicle on State Road 3 in Westport on Monday night.

The Indiana State Police responded at about 9 p.m. to a report of a child being struck and killed. The initial investigation by Trooper Jacob Tolle and the Indiana State Police-Versailles District Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by David C. Vanderbur, 45, Greensburg, was traveling northbound on State Road 3, approaching Main Street in Westport. The investigation determined that 2-year-old Lena J. Snowden, Westport, entered onto State Road 3 from the Pine Lake Apartments into the path of Vanderbur’s vehicle.  Vanderbur was unable to avoid striking Snowden, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, spokesman for the Indiana State Police.

Snowden sustained fatal injuries in the crash.  She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Decatur County Coroner’s Office.  Vanderbur was not injured in the crash, Wheeles said.
