Columbus native receives scholarship

A Columbus native was one of 27 people selected to receive an educational scholarship as part of the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation’s 2017 Higher Education Scholarship Program.

Mykala Matheny, a 2015 Columbus North High School graduate and student at DePaul University in Chicago, received a $3,500 Binc Scholarship.

She is a film and TV major and plans to work in the film/documentary, post-production industry, according to a news release.

“I would not be able to pursue what I love to the extent to which I am without the support I’ve received through Binc,” Matheny said in a news release.

The recipients were selected from 125 applicants composed of bookstore owners, booksellers, former Borders Books employees or their dependents.

Matheny is a part-time bookseller at Viewpoint Books in Columbus.

A total of $109,000 was awarded to help booksellers from 23 stores in 14 states reach their educational goals.

The scholarships can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and room and board. Funds may also be used over consecutive years if the student is not able to use the entire award for the 2017-18 academic year.
