COLUMBUS
Joe B. Spears, 89, of Columbus, passed from this life at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, September 24, 2017 at I.U. Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mr. Spears was born September 5, 1928, in Glasgow, Kentucky, the son of Harrison and Cordia Gibson Spears. He married Wanda I. Sweeney VanBlaricum March 17, 1967.
Mr. Spears worked in the factory and boiler room at Cosco Inc., retiring after 44 years of service.
Mr. Spears was of the Baptist faith and an avid fisherman. He enjoyed working in his flowers and camping. Mr. Spears and his wife, Wanda, found much enjoyment wintering the last several years in Bowling Green, Florida.
Mr. Spears in survived by his wife of 50 years, Wanda; his children, Larry (Jan) Spears of Nashville, Indiana, Joyce Devine of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Patricia Spears of Orlando, Florida; a step-daughter, Pam (Bob) Tempest of Columbus; grandchildren, Tyler Spears of Nashville, Indiana, Kyle Spears of Bloomington, Indiana, Ali McCaghren of Orlando, Florida, Tim Maines of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Joel Devine of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cory Devine of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; a step-grandson, Craig Holcomb of Columbus; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Spears was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Winford and Edd Spears; and a sister, Lucille Slinker.
The funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Paul Hardin officiating.
Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Love Chapel or the donor’s choice of charities.
