Columbus emergency officials braced for severe weather as a strong line of thunderstorms moved through parts of Indiana and Kentucky, but the city escaped the worst of the high winds and rain suffered by other areas of the state.

Jennings County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police searched throughout the morning for the site of a possible airplane crash west of North Vernon, but found nothing.

1967

A large quantity of gasoline accidentally flowed into a storm sewer in the downtown Columbus area, forcing the evacuation of Columbus Elks Club at Third and Franklin streets.
