Columbus police officers arrested a driver with a breath-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit after seeing his vehicle weaving near 25th Street and U.S. 31 early Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Josh McCrary saw the Chevy Cobalt cross the center line several times at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
As the Cobalt was pulling over, McCrary saw the driver hit a curb, bending one of the vehicle’s rims and flattening the front right tire. McCrary noted that the driver, Travis L. Castetter, 31, of 4015 S. County Road 400W, had slurred speech as well as a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, Harris said.
Castetter failed several field sobriety tests and was taken to the Columbus Police Department for a certified chemical breath test, Harris said. The result of that test was a breath sample of .216 percent, Harris said. A violation occurs when the blood-alcohol count reaches .08 percent.
Castetter was arrested on a preliminary charge of a operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or greater. He is being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
