Basil Coryell

Basil Coryell, 93, of Columbus, formerly of Taylorsville, passed from this life at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home.

Mr. Coryell was born February 23, 1924, in Jennings County, the son of Alvin Elbert and Eva Maude Etchison Coryell. On April 19, 1953, he married Delores Sue Eddy; she preceded him in death on October 16, 1996.

Mr. Coryell served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict from 1947 to 1952.

During World War II, Mr. Coryell worked at Noblitt-Sparks where he helped make bomb heads.

He later was employed as a die maker at the former Golden Foundry, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Coryell was a member of New Hope Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1987 and the American Legion Post 24, and he enjoyed reading.

Mr. Coryell is survived by his loving sisters, Rhea Quillen, Vera Hill, Hallie Huckaby and Nancy Murphy, all of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mr. Coryell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue; brothers, Leo and Donald O. Coryell, and sisters, June Mitchell and O’Donna Fern Hartwell.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with John Sichting officiating.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or New Hope Christian Church.
