Westport man hiding in attic wanted on 2 warrants

JENNINGS COUNTY — Indiana State Police arrested a Westport man after an eight-hour standoff with police in North Vernon.

Jonathan Snyder, 34, is being held at the Jennings County Jail without bond, jail officials said.

The incident began at 10 a.m. Thursday when members of the Indiana State Police All Crimes Policing Team went to 2710 Coventry Gardens in North Vernon to serve an arrest warrant on Snyder, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, state police spokesman.

Snyder was wanted on warrants for felony domestic battery out of Jennings and Bartholomew counties, Wheeles said. He was also wanted on a parole violation warrant.

When they arrived, troopers determined Snyder was inside but he refused to come out, Wheeles said. Troopers then obtained a search warrant. But upon attempting to enter the residence, they found that Snyder had barricaded all the doors from the inside, Wheeles said.

The state police south zone SWAT team was notified and numerous attempts were made to get Snyder to willingly exit the home, Wheeles said.

At about 6 p.m. Thursday, troopers entered the residence and found Snyder hiding in an attic above a bedroom, where he was arrested, Wheeles said. In addition to the arrest warrants, Snyder was also charged with resisting law enforcement, Wheeles said.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Department assisted state police at the scene.
