Deputies arrest driver after U.S. 31 traffic stop

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a driver on drug-related charges after a traffic stop on U.S. 31.

Deputy Dustin Newland saw a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 31 commit a traffic violation at 3:58 a.m. Sunday, deputies said. Newland stopped the vehicle at U.S. 31 and Bear Lane and confirmed that Chasity Williams, 33, Edinburgh, had a suspended driver’s license, deputies said.

Sgt. Kris Weisner arrived to assist and K9 Bolt alerted deputies to an odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, deputies said. Investigators found methamphetamine and drug-related paraphernalia inside the vehicle along with a loaded handgun, deputies said.

Williams was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and carrying a handgun without a license.

Williams’ bond was set at $65,000, but she was released from the Bartholomew County Jail under the county’s pre-trial diversion program which allows defendants to be released without posting bail.
