Columbus racing family celebrates wins for father and son

Jason Setser of Columbus returned to Victory Lane for the UMRA King of the TQ Midgets on June 16 at Circus City Speedway in Peru. Setser, who won his first feature of the year as the former series champion, took the top honors over Jason Goff of Fortville, Matt Lux of Shelbyville and Aaron Percell and Matthew Hedrick, both from Rushville.

Setser’s Lynch Chassis car is owned by John and Lynn Whittington and is powered by a Kawasaki motor and sponsored by The Cure Starts Now, Mensendiek’s Auctions, Lynch Machining and Setser Fabrication.

Jason and Mindy Setser’s 9-year-old son Gunnar also went to Victory Lane on June 16. The youngster in his first year of racing junior sprint cars has raced seven times this season and won four feature races. His sponsors include Midwest Tube Mills, Integrated Racing and The Cure Starts Now.

The UMRA King of the TQ Midgets will be in action tonight at Brownstown Speedway and then to conclude the month of June, the series will be at the Rush County Fair in Rushville on Thursday and Friday and Twin Cities Raceway on June 30. Tony Stewart is tentatively scheduled to race in the Rushville event, his first appearance there in more than 20 years.

Sullivan wins again at Brownstown

Colton Sullivan of Columbus won his second consecutive super stock feature at Brownstown Speedway on June 16, winning a battle over the same driver he competed against two weeks ago, Jason Hehman of Brownstown. Tim Schumpe of Vallonia came home third, followed by Trey Chastain of Bedford and J.T. Huffman of Salem.

Tyler Neal of Paragon won the Indiana Pro late model feature at Brownstown, taking his second win of the season over Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington, Tyler Cain of Seymour, Steven Godsey of Bedford and Isaac Rainey of Bedford.

Dusten Carr of Underwood won the special Don Russ Tribute for pure stocks. Zachary Stalker of Heltonville was second and Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee finished third. Donnie Wilson of North Vernon and Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh rounded out the top-five competitors.

Ryan Thomas of Brownstown scored his second modified feature of the year, taking the victory over Zach Fair of Petersburg, Jeremy Hines of Seymour, Jeff Stith of Louisville and Dave Baldwin of Perrysville.

Stapleton wins Twin Cities crate feature

Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh won the crate late model feature on June 16 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Austin Burns of Morgantown was second with Brad Barrow of Bloomington taking third. Justin Shaw of Greenwood and Dylan Norman of Bedford completed the top five.

Earl Plessinger of Scottsburg won his first open wheel modified feature of the season. Jeff Deckard of Ellettsville was second. Dustin Golden of Bedford, John Trowbridge of North Vernon and Andy Carver of Orleans rounded out the top-five finishers.

Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing won the super stock main. John Tyler of North Vernon was second. They were followed across the finish line by Danny Hupp of Scipio, Craig Markel of Columbus and Kelly Davis of Hanover.

Mark Bruce of Commiskey won the pure stock feature, outdueling North Vernon’s Troy Clark for the win. Charles Newby of Seymour was third, with Daniel Hupp of Scipio and John Tyler taking fourth and fifth.

Donnie Modesty of Seymour captured the hornet division feature winning over T.J. Wright of North Vernon, Warren Laufer of Madison, Andy Anderson of North Vernon and Davey Waggoner Jr. of North Vernon.

Kinser wins at Bloomington

Jordan Kinser of Bedford won the sprint car feature on June 15 at Bloomington Speedway. Daylon Chambers of Bowling Green was second, with Jeff Bland Jr. of Bedford taking third. Completing the top five were Brandon Morin on Jasonville and Jaden Rogers of Worthington.

Hehman captured the super stock main over Bloomington racers Jack Frye, Steve Hawkins and Steve Hollars. Sam Arthur of Springville was fifth.

Anton Hernandez of Arlington, Texas, won the RaceSaver sprint feature, leading Luke Bland of Bloomington, Andy Bradley of Bloomington, Jeff Wimmenauer of New Whiteland and Ryan Tusing of Santa Claus to the finish line.

Lawrenceburg in action

Lawrenceburg Speedway was back in action on June 16 with Nick Bilbee winning the sprint car feature. Dickie Gaines finished in second followed by Landon Simon, Garrett Abrams and Brent Beauchamp. Adam Stricker won the open wheel modified over Matt Hamilton, Brad Wieck, David Spille and Scotty Kincaid.

Stanbrough back, wins Paragon

Veteran Jon Stanbrough, who announced during the 2017 racing season that he was stepping away from full-time racing at the end of last year, returned to the cockpit on June 16 at Paragon Speedway and came home the winner of the Johnson Memorial Race for sprint cars.

Chambers, who finished second the night before at Bloomington, garnered the runner-up spot at Paragon with Jordan Kinser, Josh Cunningham and Aric Gentry completing the top-five drivers.

This week in racing history

From 50 years ago in 1968 at Bloomington, it was Dick Gaines taking the feature win over Don Nordhorn, Butch Wilkerson, Jim Johnson and Orville Yeadon.

Also from 1968 at Brownstown Speedway, Paul Crockett won two feature events. He won the rained-out makeup feature from the previous week and the regularly scheduled late model feature.

Also from this weekend in 1968 at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, Paul Crockett won the late model feature over Gene Petro and Ray Godsey.

From 40 years ago in 1978 at Bloomington, it was Bobby Black and Russ Petro taking the wins. Black won the sprint car main over Ron Dorsett, Johnny Krebbs, Jack Ziegler and Bernie Graybeal. Petro took the hobby stock feature victory over Roger Sullivan, Joe Lobb, Jacky Taylor and Bob Johnson.

Also this weekend in 1978 at Brownstown, it was Ira Bastin winning the late model feature over Dennis Boknecht, Bob Fleetwood, John Davis and Gerald Dixon. Doc Jewell won the hobby stock main over Tony Moore, Denny Ashley, Bob Johnson and Barry Smedley.

From 30 years ago in 1988 at Bloomington Speedway, it was Randy Kinser taking the sprint car feature win. Chuck Amati was second with Jeff Gordon, Kevin Briscoe and Dink Glidden completing the top five.

Also from 1988 at Twin Cities, it was Dill Whittymore winning the late model main over Charlie Sentman, Ray Godsey, Jim Curry and Noel Witcher. Jeff Daugherty won the street stock feature the same night over Donnie Wilson, Tim Clark, Mark Barber and Bobby Garrett.

Then three days later in 1988, Twin Cities ran a special program, with Whittymore again winning the late model feature over Lee Fleetwood, Eddie Carrier Sr., Daryl Herbert and Terrence Johnson. Mark Clark won the street stock feature taking the victory over Jeff Daugherty, Taulby Donnell, Tim Clark and Bobby Garrett.

In 1988 at Brownstown, it was Larry Phillips winning the Hoosier Dirt Classic race over Billy Moyer, Jim Curry, Doug Ault and John Gill. Mark Barber won the street stock feature over Earl Plessinger, Steve Kimberlin, Scott Patman and Tom Seadler.

From 1998 at Brownstown, Earl Plessinger won the street stock feature over Tim Clark and Mike Fields. Levi Ray Godsey won the bomber main over Ray Godsey Jr., Todd Kempf, Jeff Helton and Charlie Stevens Jr. The Indiana Enduro Series went to Mike Basham over Luke Wehr, Larry Gingery, Jim Ruddick and Terry Darkis.
